"High-Vis" Jackets a sign of the social media age?
Dunno about you lot in the states, but here where I live I'm seeing a huge increase in people wearing those hi-vis yellow jackets and vests...
It used to be just people in authority like parking enforcement, police support or marshals at large events - fair enough. But these days it seems like every other person is wearing one! Just walking down the seafront (boardwalk) today I counted about 24 people, all unconnected, all wearing them ! Could it be, I thought, as a 'fashion statement' ? Then it hit me - It kinda a spin off from social media. Not only do people need to post on FB and Twitter that they are walking down the seafront, and take and post selfies of themselves walking down the seafront - That is no longer enough. They now need to wear these stupid hi-vis vests to ensure that people SEE them walking along the seafront ! & Then... Consequently post about them on GFY lol BTW the seafront s in no way overly busy or dangerous, has no traffic other than pedestrians making the jacket kind redundant as a safety measure... Do you see a lot of people unnecessarily wearing these silly vests, or is it just me ????????........ /rant |

And on a cyclist thats fine - makes sense to be seen. But these people are not needing to seen, are not in danger and not 'of authority' - Just wearing these vests to 'Stand Out'

that's pretty fucking retarded. I also think the lame safety excuses for every new law and new rule has something to do with it. In 10 years people will walk around in the supermarket with helmets and life jackets.

I carry a flashlight in my hand while walking at night. I tried wearing a hi-viz hunting vest, but felt stupid and looked like a target for pissed off people.
I used to get stopped by cops alot when walking at night. I walked home one night and heard on the police scanner the dispatcher describing me and my location. Carrying the flashlight seems to help. I haven't been stopped and questioned since.
