Oculus Rift/VR Porn
VR will be the next big thing. It could even kill off the TV (why buy a huge plasma when you can watch films on a VR headset as if your in a cinema). But I would suggest films and TV shows will produce VR content. This is the early days. And to start with those who buy Oculus Rift, will be low. However many may/will use there mobile phone and/or tablet with some low teck bit of kit to give that VR feel. So the question is, should we now be shooting for VR? If so what equipment do you need to film/edit?

As long as it's shot well, like that POVD stuff. But if it's just run of the mill crap, then I'd rather watch good regular nonVR porn.

If you have the capacity to do it, I would say there will soon be a market for VR 3D Porn.
The trouble is shooting it and hardware. You will first need to learn new methods to shooting 1st person view as the viewer becomes the camera(s) like never before. Second the hardware. It is still a very immersive experience to just shoot in 3D using GoPro cameras set-up in stereoscopic. Right now, the only true consumer viewing on consumer device is GearVR. Google cardboard with a standard smartphone will not allow the user to have high speed / low latency display. (poor results not as immersive) Coming soon is the Vive (before xmas-15) and Sony's due out in the spring-16. You will have GearVR for both the Samsung Note 5 and Galaxy S6. Google will be sure to trump the market with a Android release specific to VR to improve the latency issue on other phones by fall of 2015. Who knows what Oculus is up to now??? The point of all of this is that if you want to market to this, you need to get started NOW. You have much to learn about how to do it and camera equipment is also headed around the corner. When the market really appears, you will be ready. Those that are first to market normally dominate it for some time. Unless you screw it up. The demand for it, just from the curious will probably be doubling every few months starting dec 2015 when high res (4k) high speed consumer versions are out there. So you have the summer to learn and prepare ! |

Just a update/addendum to what is happening.
Oculus has announced release for CV1 Q1 2016. Both the Vive and Oculus will have about a 4k res. Don't let that fool you as it takes twice the res in VR to provide the same crispness of video. Because by design, you are looking at the screen through a magnifying glass (for a 100 degree or better field of view) and you don't want to be able to see the space between the pixels.(pixel density). Probably need to shoot in 1 - 2k res. if you want to play back on normal lower power devices. I'm sure things will change quick as they put more powerful graphics chips in phones. Like dual GPU's. GoPro is going to be entering the VR market. I can't see porn needing to be shot in a full Omnispheric video. Hemispheric video will do. You just need to "not do" certain things you might otherwise have done like panning the cam quickly or zooming fast. ...more later... |
