A French bartender was convicted of manslaughter on Wednesday after serving 56 shots to a customer who died the next day.

The customer, 56-year-old Renaud Prudhomme, downed the alcohol in October 2014 in an attempt to beat the establishment's record of 55 shots, which bartender Gilles Crepin says he kept written on a board in Le Starter, a bar in the French city of Clermont-Ferrand. A lawyer representing Prudhomme's daughter contends Crepin encouraged the dangerous stunt, and should be responsible for the consequences, reports Agence France-Presse.

Prudhomme proceeded to down the first 30 shots of alcohol in about one minute, ultimately drinking a liter of booze, reports The Telegraph.

Following the drinking contest, Prudhomme's daughter escorted him home, but had to take the inebriated man to a hospital when he went into cardiac arrest. He died the next day.

The court handed Crepin a four-month suspended sentence, and banned him from working in a bar for a year. His lawyer, Renaud Portejoie, told the BBC they intend to appeal the ruling.

"It's a decision guided by emotion and the unconscious desire to set an example," Portejoie said. "We can't ask every customer who buys alcohol to present their medical certificates."

I never puked at the bar.. no I made it home in the 20+ min cab ride. Then passed out watching tv.. Then when I woke up later fell down in a way that I did internal damages.. Waited 3 weeks to go see the doc and was hospitalized for 25 days..

Not to get into a pissin' match...but what size was the draft beer glasses? The small bar drafts or ones that held a full pint?

I'm half Irish/half Newfie - I won the alcohol tolerance genetic lottery. But even my most notorious night wasn't that high an intake.

22 beers, 6 shots of Jack Daniels and 4 B-52 shots.

I had an epic 3-day hangover that wasn't pretty.

Well, I drink plenty but I think I would die from 1 liter of vodka.

When the guy checked into the hospital he probably answered no for the "do you abuse drugs" question.

YES! I'm pretty sure if this happened in the USA the bar would lose it's liquor license for something that stupid to one post that someone before drank 55 shots and to serve another person 56 shots. BAC of .37%-.40% or higher can cause death. I'm pretty sure that many shots that fast would equal around that.

It's against the law to over serve someone.

i'm glad i'm a lightweight. 2-3 beers and i have a cool and fun buzz. it's cheap, not going to kill myself with alcohol (slowly or quickly) and no worries the next morning.

Wow... that's a lot of alcohol. Like the other Irishman in the thread. The tolerance is no joke and sucks. Getting ripped takes 3-4 times what my friends are drinking and shit gets expensive!
