Links, how should they be styled now?

Updating a site that wasn't touched in about 10 years and again I have to ask myself, do surfers expect and want underlined links in a navigation area , or it it so old school it is not advisable?

Not looking to be trendy, just not trying to look or be very dated.

As a user, I prefer the underline or a stylistic variation of some sort so that it's clear there is a link available for more info. If there is no styling, the user will only see the link if they know the link should be there or if they accidentally stumble upon it.

Use the blink tag. I hear that's hot right now.

Better to have a list of links in a navigation area or some sort of css "buttons"?

We had back-lit glowing hover-over links...changed color when you went over them with the mouse. Seemed fairly eye-catching at the time...probably dated now.
