Looks like I might have to put my kitty to sleep soon.

Well this sucks.

My cat is only 3 years old but for the past few weeks and months she has been in pain and not eating much etc, and her behaviour has been very strange and quite aggressive at times.

After a few vet visits and pet hospital visit, it seems it's a problem with fluid of some sort at the area of the brain and it's only gonna get worse and seemingly won't be operated on. Not the news I hoped for. And the vet today basically said I will have a decision to make sooner rather than later.

Not good...

Yeah I think it's because she's only 3 it seems way too soon to even have to consider having to do this.

If the pain gets much worse though it's obviously the choice that has to be made.

Gutted...

Hi Scott,

Wow man that's so sad... I'm really sorry to hear that. I fucking LOVE my cats, and get instantly attached to other cats too. Sorry it has to happen to you.

Here are too many pictures of my babies

We adopted both of these as kittens, about 2 years after we had to put our last cat down, who was 17 and had cancer. We promised ourselves we would never have cats again because it was just too hard, but after a year or so, we finally came around.

When the sad day comes, take her to your vet, and have her put down properly by a technician. They will give her a drug to calm her down, then one to sleep, and then a final one. It's peaceful. It's extremely difficult to do, but its the best thing you can do for your little friend.

Good luck.

I'm so sorry about your cat, she's beautiful...

I have a cat w/ diabetes and cancer. His age is unknown, he was a stray who adopted me about 8 yrs ago (vet estimates he's 12 - 14). Luckily working from home means I can give him his insulin ($300 a month) 2x/day and care for him. Every day is a gift that he's still here. He was only supposed to live 3 months from last July and he's lived a year. It's going to break my heart when he's gone.

I agree about cats and vaccines btw. I lost my other cat to a sarcoma that began at the vaccine injection site from a rabies shot.

Poor lil shaver My girl will be 15 next month.just received a call about possible kidney problems and needs more tests.other than kidney transplants there isn't much I can do but diet and medication to try to slow down the progression. Odd - we had two that lived into their 20th year - both vaccinated.

IMO your source is FOS.

(edit) - Scott, sorry to hear of your cat's condition. It's tough, I know. We had to put one down that developed liver failure (almost) overnight - woke up one morning to find her jaundiced and in distress...no warning signs.

I hope the best for your companion.

Cats are very good at coping. Unfortunately, that means that they usually don't show warning signs of a condition until it is fairly advanced. Typically, one of the best warning signs that something is wrong is their acting out, such as not using the litter box.

Oh jeeze that is heartbreaking

do u have a university with a veterinary school near you? they do more cutting edge aggressive treatment/surgery than a local vet will.

did u get a name of the condition your cat has so you can research it online?

Not that i know of or can find online anyway no.

I will phone the vet back today and ask what the actual term for the condition was. I was probably already told but didn't take it in.

Basically what they suspected was wrong with the cat never showed up on the x-rays at all. They thought it was originally pelvic problems causing the pain. But the x-rays showed this build up of mass behind the eyes at the area of the brain, and it seems that is clearly where the problem lies.

To act on it would come with very, very high risks and cost (the cost of which doesn't bother me though). But it's because of the risks and the probability it wouldn't be a success anyway that the vet is basically ruling out operating.

Funny thing is, on the very strong meds yesterday and today, the cat seems much better. But she can't stay on those forever and they aren't actually correcting the problem anyway, which will only grow bigger and bigger...

Losing pet always sucks.

However I cannot think cats without thinking toxoplasmosis (outdoor cats have it, as well as about half of the humans thanks for those outdoor cats). Also about third of the cats or some significant amount anyways die to that toxoplasmosis (it goes to its brain and all over the body too). That mind manipulating parasite is a real bitch (it manipulates you too).

Anyways, good luck for your cat (and to you).

That sucks.

Same kind of thing happened to my partner's cat, 5 years old, got sick and had to be put down in a matter of days, had been vaccinated and looked after well.

Sometimes there's just no explaining these things.
