So I rescued a frog from my swimming pool this morning

We're building a pool in our back yard and it is about half full of water. Today it's raining. I happen to glance and see this frog swimming around. There is about 5 feet of water at the deep end but only about 1 foot at the shallow end, so it had no way to get out of the Pool.

I went out in the rain to try to catch it with a net at first. In the end the only way to catch the little guy was to get into the pool. I coaxed him closer to me with the net and tried to catch him in my hands but he was too slippery. In the end I was able to use my hand and the net together to catch him.

I got out of the pool and walked to a little creek area just behind the properly and let him go. I think he was a happy frog. Tired but happy.

I tracked water and mud back into the house. Tracy think's I'm ridiculous. I think Frogs are awesome.

That is nothing; I let spiders to do webs in my house. Somehow I am still single. Though I have escorted one or two into "freedom" because so cute, innocent and whatever (apply the stuff from the hunting threads) spider couple died into hunger. I guess my house isn't quite complete ecosystem yet. You know; not enough flies for the spiders to fun kill, or whatever.

Private pools are such a waste of water and such hassle. My dad has a rather large one, it's very nice, he built it himself, did not even fill it this year.

Are you building yours or paying someone?

When your pool is complete, get a skimmer critter ramp (Amazon.com : Critter Skimmer 10-Inch Square Pool Skimmer Cover, White : Swimming Pool Skimmers : Patio, Lawn & Garden) which will allow frogs, mice, snakes, etc to make their own way out before they drown. Plus it saves you the surprise of opening it up to find a snake.

I once saved a frog from a pool. I had my go pro and was recording it underwater. Pretty cool.

He was tired, I put the go pro under him and he climbed on top. I then took him out of the pool.

I will agree on the hassle part but I am not so sure about the waste of water part. I have had more or less the same water in my pool since it was installed 7 years ago. In fact every spring I have to drain water out because it's over the skimmer. If it gets really hot and dry I sometimes to have to add some to top it off but that's not very often.

As for the OP - I too have saved frogs from my pool but I somehow resisted the urge to pontificate about it on GFY.

if i started a thread every time i scooped up a creature, brushed off a bug or opened the window and let a bee out, i'd have several thousand more posts.

besides, after you "rescued" that frog, it prolly hopped away and into a frog trap and has already been dissected at the local high school biology lab.

Tracy is my my common law wife of 28 years, and this is her house and pool too. Sorry I forgot to include that for you but didn't think you or anyone else would get hurt not knowing who she is. I'm very sorry I upset you so much. Please please please forgive me. I promise I will be more careful and never hurt your feelings again. Please please please don't hurt me.

Yikes, not me. I have some kind of deep fear of spiders. I'll coax them out if I can but if I see one coming right for me, I'll stand by ground.

I love to swim and am looking forward to swimming as late into the year as possible before it gets too cold. I need the excersize too as my growing gut likes to remind me.

No, there's a construction company that dug the whole and doing the installation. I wanted to be involved so I helped do small things like run cables for electricity, bury them, etc. I used Photoshop to do my own planning and rendering though which saved about $1500.

We moved here about 5 months ago only, and I never saw frogs at our old home. Raccoons and Skunks but never frogs. Here there are lots of baby frogs but I didn't see a grown frog until Yesterday. Frogs remind me of a country house I had as a kid. So an unlucky frog dying a slow death in a pool that could be rescued easily, and was, is something I felt like sharing.

Cheers.

I just lift them up with the net that you're supposed to use to skim debris out of the pool and launch them over the fence like I'm doing a tennis serve. Those fuckers fly!

I don't have a pool, but someone I know who does recommends it (not sure if it's that particular brand, but the concept is the same).

As to Sly's comment, another suggestion I would have is to look into making it a salt water pool. Apparently that cuts down on a lot of the regular maintenance.

On a side note, I have a tree frog that has taken up residence in my mailbox. The door doesn't close tightly and although I've removed him several times already, the next day he's back.

By the way, frogs may be facing even extinction. Frog populations have declined rapidly and steeply due to fucking up those environments, pollution and the decline of ozone layer.

"Amphibians are without a doubt the most endangered group of animals on the planet: nearly 1/3 of the world's species are on the brink of extinction. "

Threats to Frogs

The sad thing is that most people don't care a shit worth about things like this. Fucking Cecil lion stuff take the attention away from the fact that most species are not threatened because of "fun killing". Most threatened species are threatened because of very ordinary things we do/cause in and due to our everyday lives. But as people are very, very unwilling to change anything in their lives for example to help frogs, the attention is directed towards insignificant lion kills, etc. that requires nada actions from people themselves, other than opening their mouths on social media.

Thanks for the info! Fortunately it's already a salt water pool. I would imagine that the chemicals associated with a regular pool would have dissolved the little critter.

Yes I had heard about this before. Scary stuff. I've never understood people that don't care about animals.

When I was a kid, the lake at our country house was loud in the mornings and evenings with frogs. You could swim or paddle up to this marsh and there would be dozens and dozens of then hanging out on on lilly pads croaking away. I went back to the same lake just a few years ago. It looks great and the water seems clean, but no more frogs.

#1 on that list is habitat destruction, for example, putting in a pool where frogs live.

not saying ********** is a bad guy for choosing a pool, nevertheless, the frog used to live where that pool is.

I get dead frogs in my filter quite often. Last year I found two and went to empty them into the trash and noticed one was actually a live. Poor little guy was dead tired but he survived. I put him somewhere safe and after a few mins of sitting chilling, he hopped off pretty lucky to be alive. Found another dead one last week tho, my wife gets real upset.

Yep... you're right.

I am going to buy the critter skimmer that newB suggested and hope for the best.

I think Frogs are super cute. Birds are awesome, and some fish are really interesting. I'm not a fan of bugs, but I used to *love* the fuzzy orange caterpillars as a kid.

When I see one now I still like to pick it up and pet it then put it back. CUTE!!
