Online merchants don't have to be "ready" at all. I'm unsure why the hype here. There's no reason to feel you need to be "EMV Compliant" at all.

I do wonder, however, how this will affect all of the people who invested into those Square card readers. It seems that EMV renders that hardware obsolete.

Good, so the newer version of Square has a chip reader.

There's nothing to be "ready" for here at all if you're an online merchant.

All these "are you ready", "are you compliant" EMV (Europay International, MasterCard, and Visa) announcements are pointless unless you are actually using a POS device to accept credit card payments.

Actually Chris online merchants do you need to be prepared because fraud will certainly increase online.

Merchants should always have sound fraud prevention in place, but to say they need to be EMV compliant would be incorrect.

Correct, if you do not have a card reader there is not much you can do to be compliant, but if you rely solely on online transactions you can expect online fraudulent transactions to increase (at least it did in Canada). I guess the reason an online entrepreneur should be aware of the EMV-compliance requirement coming due is so they too can be prepared.

No, I didn't and not too sure what difference that would make. As far as being familiar with the pages on your site, I am not sure why I would be.

You're talking "metaphorically" prepared. Not prepared as in there will be changes to pci and ssl as a result from "this"

EMV card processing for online or card not present merchants is not available yet in its current form as the card is not in the merchant’s presence. Unfortunately the CNP merchants hold all the liability. We have historical data from the EU, Australia, and Canada that when EMV went live the hackers moved online. Merchants saw an increase in online fraud by upwards of 40%. Experts believe there will be a shift in fraud to more online merchants since it becomes an easier exploit. Card not present transactions, while EMV is not supported yet, does have tools and protocols that can be used on a daily basis to mitigate a large amount of fraudulent transactions. Practicing PCI Compliance, only accepting cards with AVS (Address verification) and CVV (Card Verification value), validating unusual or a large amount of transactions from a single cardholder with a simple phone call can go a long way. Taking advantage of currently Mobius Payments Digital Authentication services such as Verified by Visa and Mastercard SecureCode. All these Tools offer another layer of protection against fraud.

I contacted my merchant account bank and asked them if I need this feature for online purchases. They told me no I absolutely don't need it. It is in their interests that I keep my chargebacks low so I will go with their opinion. Also Matt you said:

We accept payments from all over the world and have been for 17 years. If anything I've seen a decline in chargebacks.
