Do you guys go mushrooming?

I have a hunch that this might be unusual for some (maybe more than fishing and eating carps? )

However, anybody likes mushrooming here? I like it more than fishing, but I manage to do that maybe 1 or 2 times in a year only.

Today I went and found loads of these:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:S...anulatus_1.jpg

Fucking delicious! Recipe came out to something like this:

Anybody DIG THAT?

Where do you find these kinds of mushrooms? I've only found morels in east Texas. Other mushrooms found there in the wild can be very toxic.

That is one exotic looking mushroom, prior to this moment I would have passed by it as inedible
Now I will be on the look out for them

I messed up wiki link:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suillus_granulatus
Quote:
It is common in Britain, Europe, and North America.
You look for them in the wild (they usually like fir or pine forests).

But this is not a particular or special mushroom, it was just the one I found.

There is a huge overgrown Cemetery near me that is great for that - It freaks me out a bit though - Shrooms that might have fed on dead people - Not sure that's cool...

Totally thought this thread was going in a totally different direction.

I used to hunt mushrooms when I visited my aunt and uncle in Indiana. They always got really excited about it, and I will say, the mushrooms they found tasted really good when cooked.

These are the kind we hunted.

3 people posted and all of them talked only about Morel. Sounds like this is undisputed #1 mushroom in US

While my undisputed #1 is:

We know them as ceps - I feel a mushroom risotto coming on...

The more varieties you can squeeze in the better - Every mouthful is different.....

Besides fishing when I go camping, hunting mushrooms is one of the things I really enjoy doing while hiking.

Minnesota is loaded with edible mushrooms including Morels in the spring. There is a false Morel out there so make sure the bottom of the cap is connected to the stem and not just a bell shape around it. The false wont kill you but it will make you extremely sick.

So far this year Ive had about 8 different varietys. Right now Chantrelles, Oysters and Lobsters are in season.

Heading up north tomorrow to do some lake trout fishing. Hoping to find some lobsters where i'm going. If you've never had them, they have the consistency of lobster meat.

Oh so tasty, ugly as hell though.

Respect

I love chantrelles, although I do not pick oysters (does not look like a "serious" mushroom to me and is not valued that much).

As for lobsters - have not noticed them yet, but I will be on the look out for them
Mushrooms like that are easy to mix with something else, so I only pick the ones I am 100% sure to be edible.
I mean you can go, see 10 unknown mushrooms and you just pass them by. Yet 8 out of 10 could be good ones and only 2 bad ones. But you pass them as they look strange or unknown.

Just did a quick research, looks like "false Morel" is used to describe more than 1 mushroom:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verpa_bohemica
This article puts it as "edible, but questionable".
My "mushroom handbook" puts it as edible (even ranks better than oysters).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyromitra_esculenta
This one is poisonous.

Both are regarded as "false morel"

You can see that it is pretty dangerous sometimes (especially for some noobs), different mushrooms looking similar etc.

I use a lot of shiitake mushrooms - inexpensive over here.

As for foraging, there's a saying that goes like this:

"All mushrooms are edible. Some only once."

I think that is the same one yes, we can pick them on Vancouver Island. Sometimes I grab them from the farmers market for $20 / pound... guess they are a lot more expensive in Japan! I love chanterelles too, but they are pretty boring once you've had Pines.

Yep, mainly boletus but I do stumble accross the occasional field of parasols.

We get loads of fly agarics (Amanita muscaria) up here, but you have to be very careful with them.

I've been clearing land up in the mountains recently, and have been coming across alot of puffballs and this odd fucker Aseroë rubra, at first I thought it was a chicken head.

Why careful? It is very distinguishable one and everybody knows it. Those who do not know it are not the ones who ever went mushrooming
This one is easy to avoid

Just pick boletus
Not that easy to mix it with something else
Of course this strategy also has minuses - you could not find any of them in certain area, yet there would be many good other kind of mushrooms that you would leave

If you plan on getting off your head on them, you have to proceed with caution.

I had a mate that used to munch on them, very small amounts over 3-4 hours.

I never go out unless I have a book with me. Its saved my ass a couple of times.

I think these guys make one for a lot of different regions in the world. $15 bucks is a small price to pay to not get sick, or worse yet, die.

Here is the book I use. Small, easy to carry and great pictures with details on each mushroom along with false varietys linked to them and how to distinguish.

Mushrooms of the Upper Midwest: A Simple Guide to Common Mushrooms: Teresa Marrone, Kathy Yerich: 9781591934172: Amazon.com: Books

However I believe you would be fine (if that happens) without the book as well, since it looks like you know some species well. So you could be just picking those that you are 100% sure about

true, part of the thrill for me now is finding new species and identifying if they are edible or not.

Do you guys have chicken of the woods where you are?

Another fantastic mushroom here.
