:stop Feds charge 8 in California with distributing homemade guns

hotlinked

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? Eight men were charged Thursday with making and distributing dozens of firearms, many of them assault-style weapons illegally equipped with silencers, in what federal officials are calling one of the biggest takedowns in California's Central Valley.

Undercover agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives purchased or seized more than 230 firearms and silencers. Many are known as "ghost guns" because they lack serial numbers and can be sold without background checks or transfer documents.

"Firearms trafficking such as that alleged in this indictment is one of the primary sources of crime guns found on the streets, and the manufacture of untraceable, unserialized firearms hampers criminal investigations, putting the public at greater risk," U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wagner said at a news conference. "High-capacity assault rifles, with silencers but without serial numbers, are some of the most lethal weapons that criminals can get their hands on."

The charges include dealing in firearms without a license, unlawfully manufacturing firearms, possession of silencers, short-barreled rifles and firearms lacking serial numbers, and conspiracy. Three of the eight face separate drug charges, which Wagner said shows a connection between gun and narcotics trafficking.

Among those named in the 70-count indictment David Bennett, 27, a former probationary correctional officer with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department.

Bennett and his brother are charged with conspiring to make and deal unlicensed firearms from their Stockton home. His attorney, Michael Long, did not immediately return messages.

We are going to see more and more of things like this popping up. Im not sure if im against it or for it.

I feel they should be able to manufacture them, but must number them like other manufacturers.

I laugh at all these politicians because they have all these gun laws for the purpose of pandering votes and then this happens. they can put in 1,000 new gun laws and that will never stop the criminals. and for all of you that think it will goes to show your ignorance of what the real world is like. people like you are baited by the politicians because they know you don't have a clue, won't do any research because you don't have the intelligence and therefore believe anything they say. and I am sure they sit back, laugh at your stupidity and that you will re elect them because they baited you and you swallowed their bait hook, line and sinker.

Before calling out people for being ignorant, you might want to take an English class. Start with a basic class first. You have to crawl before you walk. Its doubtful you will ever run.

You can buy these off the internet and only need a drill press to finish the gun and you have a ar15 of your own. They have been doing this for years.

Its legal to make them for yourself and you can never sell it or give it away, but they were manufacturering them for mass sale. Not to mention the unlicensed sliencers..

Why do you pretend this is no big thing, when they are clearly and purposely breaking a half dozen federal and state laws?

For me what is interesting - how is it legal to make unregistered gun?
Unless you must register it and get a "number".

It goes back to blacksmith days where people made shit themselves. You can't just say that you can't build something for yourself as long as it isn't a restricted weapon.

Hell there is a teenage kid that made a small nuclear reactor in his parents basement. It was completely legal.

guns do not have to be registered if you make them. given out or sold = registered. what if you loan them out??

Cool, so criminals should start making their guns. They will have the benefit of having that gun which is not traceable and at the same time would not need to worry of getting caught with the gun without serial numbers.

That is a very strange loophole.

It's not just a loophole...it's reality.

Even if the govt. passed yet another law...how in the hell are they going to stop a person from making a gun at home?

Answer: They can't.

Which is why banning guns would never work.
First off, criminals already don't obey the gun laws. And they certainly aren't going to suddenly start obeying the law if the idiots in Washington D.C. pass another one.

They will simply make their own guns.

Then I suppose that the feds could make ammunition illegal. But that will just lead to people making their own ammo too.

The Chinese figured out gunpowder centuries ago. If they could make guns and ammo way back then...it's a simple matter for people to do it today.

Trying to pretend that we can go back in time by passing laws is a futile exercise.

That is another story.
They can not stop a person from scratching serial numbers off as well.
Point is that it is highly illegal.
Yet making your own gun the same (without serial numbers) is legal.

VERY strange logic.

I think that's because the govt. is doing far more than it was ever intended to do.
So as the govt. consolidates more and more power for itself, it creates unintended consequences.

For instance, one of the first drug laws was over heroin in the early 1900's. At that time it was manufactured by Bayer and available over the counter at stores.
Congress struggled with the idea of making a law that would tell people what they could and couldn't do with their own bodies.

Their was debate over whether the Govt. even had that power. (seems quaint these days when the govt. regulates everything you do).

Anyway, once they opened that door...they then created tons of new problems that they had to enact new laws to "fix".

And then it becomes more and more complicated with each year as they try to pass new laws to fix the new problems that the old laws created and then the new laws create even more problems! (for instance, the drug war has brought on violence across the country and the Mexican border...and after all these decades, the govt.'s answer it to make even more laws and they even want to build a wall!)

Probably need a "reset" button to get rid of thousands and thousands of laws in this country and get a little more common sense. Get the government back into the business of governing instead of trying to rule over us.
