This is the shocking moment a street food vendor cuts off his own penis after a heated row on the telephone with his girlfriend.

The incident involving the 21-year-old man, identified only by his initials of "HB", was captured on a grainy CCTV image shot in Yenisehir District in Mersin, a city on the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey.

It shows the bagel seller arguing on the phone before opening his trousers and appearing to cut off his manhood with a razor.

Although the footage is not clear, eyewitnesses told media that he slashed his penis with the razor until it was severed in the busy street in broad daylight.

A plain clothes police officer intervened to restrain him with the help of passers-by.

The man was then taken to the Mersin University Medical Faculty Hospital where surgeons managed to reattach the severed organ.
