Name 5 Bands You Wish Still Toured

I'm talking about when they were young and strong, not now when they're ancient and with barely any original members. For example, Led Zeppelin with John Bonham as their drummer, etc.

For me it's:

The Who
The Grateful Dead
Bruce Springsteen & the (original) E Street Band
KISS
Queen

I was lucky enough to have seen them all except for The Who. (I saw them years after Keith Moon died. Still good but not the same thing.) Who were the best live bands you ever saw?

The Who and KISS still tour. Matter of fact, The Who is about to kick off another tour on Feb 11, and KISS just started their 2016 tour today.

Yeah the Guns 'n Roses with Izzy Stradlin! Once Izzy left it all just crumbled from there. Too bad Izzy can't sing worth shit 'cause his first couple solo records fucking ROCKED.

Guns is touring again with Slash but I predict a disaster. LOL

Skynyrd and Pink Floyd are great ones! I saw Roger Waters do The Wall at Yankee Stadium a couple years back, not quite the same experience (but still pretty cool).

Yeah Van Halen just isn't the same without him, right? You would think a bass player could be replaced but the vocals could not be. Shame. Probably a money issue.

I think it was simply a way to get Eddie's fat-ass son, Wolfgang, on the stage. They suck without Michael Anthony. I used to be an Eddie fan, but he revealed himself to be just a giant douche.

I see several posters have mentioned Led Zeppelin. I saw them in 1975 in London, and did not like them live--even though I was, and still am, a huge fan of their albums. They were incredibly over-indulgent, almost to the point of parody, and the zenith of this was Jimmy Page playing his Les Paul with a violin bow for twenty fucking minutes during just one song.

A couple years ago, I had the misfortune to catch the end of a Yanni concert on TV, and for the encore number Yanni would play a few notes on his violin, flourish the bow to great applause, and then play a few more notes, ad nauseam. I instantly flashed back to Jimmy Page doing the same thing while playing the classic 'Dazed and Confused'. And it made me feel sad for a while, but then I just smiled . . . .

For years, rags all had it pinned on Dave, when it was really Edward all along. If it wasn't for Sammy spilling the beans, rocklore would still be blaming it on Dave. It was easy to blame Dave, because of his, need to be in-the-spotlight eccentric behavior. Mike can't stand Eddie and will no longer put up with him. It had nothing to do with them trying to get Wolfgang into the band.

I saw Van Halen with Wolfgang, and yes, the kid can play, but there is no Van Halen sound without Mike. Not to mention he added a lot more electricity to their stage presence then people actually ever gave him credit for.

Zeppelin was notorious for NEVER sounding like their albums when they played live. I guess that can be good or bad considering one's point of view.

Robert Plant, even during his solo career, never sounded studio.

I think 'Dazed and Confused' only works when you are actually dazed and confused. Maybe on LSD or something. LOL I couldn't even take Bonham's drum solo on 'Moby Dick'.

Let the Rock Gods strike me down like a blown tube in a marshall amp but Led Zep just sucked as a live band. Jimmy Page to me is all about the studio not the stage. He could never be as good as Clapton or Beck live (think Yardbirds). A lot of people would say Bonham was not... ahem... a pocket drummer... if they were being polite. I don't blame Plant for going off on his own since he writes great songs, performs live well, etc.

LSD much better with GD - the jams are an epic journey on a treacherous mountain highway where the Zep jams are like a stalled vehicle off a dirt road on a rainy day.

Pure poetry!

And yes, I am totally with you on this one. When the live Zep 3 CD set came out (How The West Was Won) I was so excited because I had never heard Led Zeppelin live other than the very weak The Song Remains The Same soundtrack. Man was I disappointed! There was some good acoustic stuff on there but the rest was exactly like you said.

I want to get back into the Dead but it makes me so sad to hear their music now. I hated it when jerry died and the roving caravan of fans that followed them everywhere just stopped. To me, that and Cobain equaled the death of rock as we knew it.

Sniff.

I only saw Van Halen once in '84 (with Roth)...and he sounded surprisingly good that night in Toronto. I've seen many, many other concert footage where he just sounds plain awful (especially these days). But as you say - they've lost the trademark VH harmonies without Mike.

I waited 30 years with hopes Dave would someday regroup with them - only to be disappointed when he finally did. The ADKOT album sounded good, IMO...but Roth's vocals in concert were extremely bad. I found myself thinking Sammy would've been the better of the two - but I doubt that'll ever happen.

Yea, much like Mike, Sammy is done with VH as well. I saw them at the Pontiac Silverdome 3rd row, when they headlined the Monsters of Rock tour "OU812". Great fucking show.

Awesome list!

I would include Lou Reed. I saw him once in the eighties and he was incredible. I miss Lou!

The 80s? How old are you? I figured you were just a few years older than me. I'm 39.

Over the last 15 years the only band I saw, who were from my youth, that was as good or better than I remember were Cream and the Stones. They may have been slightly better. As if they improved with age.

The rest were all enjoyable. Even though the years had taken their toll. Even Genesis lacked some of the rawness I remember with Peter Gabriel or young Phil Collins as front men.

Good thing is, a lot have their old performances on DVD. The Who Live at Isle of Wight, Hendrix at Woodstock, Pink Floyd Wall, Cream farewell and 2005.

Woodstock, Isle ofWight, on DVD. Anyone know of more?

I waited 30 years with hopes Dave would someday regroup with them - only to be disappointed when he finally did. The ADKOT album sounded good, IMO...but Roth's vocals in concert were extremely bad. I found myself thinking Sammy would've been the better of the two - but I doubt that'll ever happen.
Sammy has been busy... hanging out with Bob Weir and Michael Franti getting his hippie freak on...

Reasonably sure I heard Fleetwood Mac is touring again with the original lineup of Stevie, Lindsay, Christine, John and Mick.

You've been hearing false....

You didn't hear from this guy did ya?

I know you knew that was coming.
Especially since I am reasonably sure you knew John has been dead for 15 years. Nice set up for me to spike though

Queen... I would have loved to have seen Queen with Freddie Mercury.
