Umberto Eco dead at 84

One of my all time favorite writers. I must of read The Name of the Rose 7 or 8 times.

Many of his other books are great, too. Baudolino, Foucault's Pendulum.

RIP.

Enjoyed his work too. Wish I could read him in his native language.

I can (not fluent, but able to read along at a reasonable pace), and it is really amazing. He uses language like a song. For instance, upon coming into a church, his character says it was lit by "Candelini, candele, e cadelone" the translation is "Tapers, candles, and votive lights" ... still beautiful, but doesn't capture the way Eco uses the italian to evoke the varying sizes of candles with only the suffix.
