Wake up tomorrow speaking ONE language perfectly, fluent to the degree of a college professor and understand all the subtitles, grammar and spellings etc, but be unable to understand any other languages...

Or be able to speak ALL languages but only at a really basic fundamental level of say a 5 or six year old?

Depends on the language - is it "international" such as English or is it a small one. That may play very strongly in the vote.

As for me - even if it was a small language I say one because I can not imagine not being able to communicate deeper thoughts etc.

Unless you ask about languages other than your own - in that case probably all by little.

Sorry. I wasn't clear. I meant your own language - The one you speak now... Not just a random one like sandskrit or something that would completely fuck up your normal life. Likewise if you choose all, you limit your ability to speak your own language down to the level of a 5 or 6 year old along with all the other languages...

Tough call. But I would have to go with one language spoken perfectly. I see the advantages of understanding the basic structure of every language, but you can't really get far if you're limited to only speaking on a semi-illiterate level.

You were clear and I understood you.
I just made a point that for someone whose language is English it may be different call than for someone whose language is some small one. Due to the fact that English could be useful internationally thus less need to know all the languages.

You would not be able to function as a human being. How would you express your feelings to your loved one as an example?

It would depend, if there's nothing stopping me from going forward and learning one or two languages at an adult level, then knowing all would be a great start in life. If I'm stuck either way I'd take English perfection without a doubt.
