Which is more violent, American Football or Rugby?

Concussion

Concussion Wikipedia

Quote:
Concussion is a 2015 American biographical sports medical drama film directed and written by Peter Landesman. This film is based on the 2009 GQ exposé "Game Brain" by Jeanne Marie Laskas.[4] The film stars Will Smith as Dr. Bennet Omalu, a Nigerian forensic pathologist who fought against efforts by the National Football League to suppress his research on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) brain damage suffered by professional football players.

End of discussion. Let me know if Rugby causes chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and more importantly, when they make a movie about it. It's obviously not something to brag about or be proud of. I love AF but I'm afraid the game will continue to change over the next several years to become a shadow of what it once was, and though I hate to admit it, maybe it should.

As someone who has played both in highschool and college, rugby is the rougher sport.

ahh, this whole thing is extremely suppressed. That nigerian doctor is basically a hero, and i think suffered a great deal of hatchet-jobs around this.. i was reading it in 2010.

NHL has big issues with this as well, and i can only assume rugby does too

Since they don't wear helmets, heads aren't banged nearly as much. That's why I always laugh off the criticism of football being weaker because they have pads. Pads make the game more dangerous.

Yeah i have played both as well and i completely disagree... (big surprise)

nobody is running at you from 15 yards away at full speed, cracking their skull into your face in rugby--and that isn't even half as bad as the average punt or kickoff where they run at you from even further. This never happens in rugby. Rugby may hurt more because there is no gear but people are more cautious because of the lack of gear, even the nutbars. Both are very rough in different ways but football is down right lethal with the violent blows that happen with at least 3 out of 4 plays.

I played rugby for several years, and although we had plenty of broken bones on our team during that time, we never had a concussion... not even close.

I played both football and hockey and hockey season was always more difficult physically than football. Never played Rugby but it looks rough without 0 padding

Making fun of NFL players wearing padded gear is really one of the dumber things that always comes up in this discussion. Newsflash; they wear it for a reason.

Rugby's a rough sport, no one who's seen or played it should dispute that. But pro football is by far the more dangerous of the two.

Injury and head trauma stats don't lie.

I totally agree with you, we should not make fun of them for wearing paddings... Hell of them open the door for us to laugh at with all their poor decision making in regards to money, women and drugs

Hmmmm....you don't routinely see American Football players coming off the field with blood pouring off their faces.

A small cut on the head can bleed profusely. "Pouring" is a little dramatic though, don't you think?

I watch a lot of football. It's not at all uncommon to see blood on players faces after removing helmets. It's also not uncommon to see blood on uniforms.

People like to compare the two sports all the time saying one is more "rougher" than the other, when although the balls are shaped the same, they are entirely two different sports.

I'm a (former) rugby player and believe me when I say it hurts.
However I would say neither Rugby or AF can compete in terms of roughness with Aussie Rules.

Both are violent sports. IMO I believe football is more violent. I always thought if they removed the helmuts, and pads the sport would become safer. Players would not launch themselves, at one another. There would be less head hunting, and players would have to tackle around the waist.

The whole debate is silly.

Nobody ever won a football game just by being the toughest.
If that were true then the toughest guy in the world would be the field goal kicker.

Agreed. Both are equally tough IMHO, however one Sunday without pads would result in multiple deaths in the NFL if it was played the same way as it is with pads.

Definitely not as rough as rugby though. AFL requires far more skill than NFL or League or Union.

Its been proved that football (soccer to you plebs) caused brain injuries from heading the ball ... so what's your point?
