A controversial Oxford University Rhodes scholar is in hot water after cheerfully recounting how he and his chums made a waitress cry ?typical white tears,? the website Heat Street reports.

South African student Ntokozo Qwabe is a leader of the Rhodes Must Fall movement, which calls for the removal of any statues of British imperialist Cecil Rhodes ? best known for his Rhodes Scholarship program.

Unpopular with many in his own ranks because of his hypocritical use of a Rhodes Scholarship to attend Oxford, Qwabe has said Rhodes is ?as bad as Hitler.?

Writing recently on Facebook, Qwabe recalled how he and some pals were at a cafe in Cape Town when their bill arrived.

But instead of filling in an amount in the line for tips, he wrote there: ?WE WILL GIVE TIP WHEN YOU RETURN THE LAND,? Heat Street reported.

?The waitress comes to us with a card machine for the bill to be sorted out. She sees the note & starts shaking. She leaves us & bursts into typical white tears (like why are you crying when all we?ve done is make a kind request? lol!),? Qwabe wrote.

?Anyways, so this white woman goes to her colleagues who are furious. She exits to cry at the back & a white male colleague of hers reluctantly comes out to address us & to annoy us more with his own white tears telling us that he finds our act ?racist.? ?

Waitress Ashleigh Schultz, 23, has been flooded with sympathy ? and more than $6,000 in tips ? from across the world.

Schultz said she?s grateful for all the support, which is allowing her to take time off work to be with her mom as she fights cancer.

?I can now use this money to put down a deposit on a place near my mom and be with her because she is sick. I can also stop working for a while,? she told the Sunday Times of Johannesburg,

An online petition is now calling for Oxford to strip Qwabe of his Rhodes scholarship ? or at least discipline him.

And even the African National Congress ? the anti-apartheid party that led the fight against colonial rule in South Africa ? is coming down on Qwabe.

?Ntokozo Qwabe?s behaviour is as much borderline criminal behaviour as it is helplessly foolish,? said ANC provincial spokesperson Yonela Diko. ?Such behavior must be rejected and abandoned.?

Cecil John Rhodes PC (5 July 1853 ? 26 March 1902)[1] was a British businessman, mining magnate and politician in South Africa, who served as Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896. An ardent believer in British imperialism, Rhodes and his British South Africa Company founded the southern African territory of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe and Zambia), which the company named after him in 1895. He entered the diamond trade at Kimberley in 1871, when he was 18, and over the next two decades gained near-complete domination of the world diamond market. His De Beers diamond company, formed in 1888, retains its prominence into the 21st century. Rhodes entered the Сape Parliament in 1880, and a decade later became Prime Minister. After overseeing the formation of Rhodesia during the early 1890s, he was forced to resign as Prime Minister in 1896 after the disastrous Jameson Raid, an unauthorized attack on Paul Kruger's South African Republic (or Transvaal). After Rhodes's death in 1902, at the age of 48, he was buried in the Matopos Hills in what is now Zimbabwe.

One of Rhodes's primary motivators in politics and business was his professed belief that the Anglo-Saxon race was destined to greatness as, to quote his will, "the first race in the world".[2] Under the reasoning that "the more of the world we inhabit the better it is for the human race",[2] he advocated vigorous settler colonialism and ultimately a reformation of the British Empire so that each component would be self-governing and represented in a single parliament in London. Ambitions such as these, juxtaposed with his policies regarding indigenous Africans in the Cape Colony?describing the country's black population as largely "in a state of barbarism", he advocated their governance as a "subject race" and was at the centre of moves to marginalize them politically?have led recent critics to characterize him as a white supremacist and "an architect of apartheid."[3]
