Question to the gfy felons or knowledgeable parties...

Can't seem to find any information on this.

Scenerio:

Unsolved murder in uppity suburb town by detectives that really have no idea what they are doing.

Police initial investigation:

Is there an unwritten law of how police would investigate for a possible suspect? Specifically, if they had no idea who would commit this crime, would they do a background check for felons in the local area with similar violent crimes? And if there is some type of normal procedure to do this background check, is there a common number of years they would check back on? If so, how many years would you think (or know with some real life experience) would be the norm?

Just curious.

Make yourself the lead detective on the case. your investigators are traffic violation cops and you need help wiping your ass in general.

Crime seen is totally contaminated, there is no DNA collected, video may exist at a traffic light but incompetence is rampant, would you do a felon check? I believe that would be protocol and my only real question is, would there be a typical time frame for that check? Like detective says to Bobby B, check felons in the county for last 10 years and see what comes up.

From what I've seen about local police departments, they are very, very smart. Crimes are not neatly wrapped up in sixty minutes like on TV, and move at a snail's pace.

Generally speaking.... If police had no suspects and were determined to solve a crime, yes, they would begin looking into other past felons to see if it was possible if they were involved.

What I am trying to figure out is if there is a normal period of time they would go back and check? Obviously they don't go back 100 years, so how far back is normal?

Hypothetical: guy is convicted for attempted murder and gets 10 years prison. The people involved in deciding how much time he should get become this felons targets. As he sits in prison, stewing on how to get his revenge, a fellow prisoner coaches him on how to get revenge. He tells this hypothetical felon to wait over 20 years to get his revenge because the detectives will only do a 20 year felon search in the county to look for possible suspects and his name wouldn't come up.

Someone on gfy must know of normal protocol and if this 20 year search holds any water.

it's unlikely there is some rule, it depends... for example: some mass murderer gets 10 years in jail and gets out...leads a normal life for 20 years... then starts murdering people again...
then some detective notices "aren't these murders similar to those murders from 30 years ago?" and so they investigate that guy based on what he did 30 years ago....
