Trump breathes fire

"For every indication of softening, however - either from Mr Trump himself or one of his surrogates - there's been a quick retrenchment. Balloons popped and signals quashed.
"There's no different message," Trump spokesperson Katrina Pierson said last week. "He's using different words to give that message."
It turns out she was half-right.

When Mr Trump delivered his much-hyped immigration speech on Wednesday night, the message was the same. But so, largely, were the words.
As he did during his nomination acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in July, Mr Trump eschewed calls for moderation and modulation, and instead delivered - no, shouted - the kind of red-meat populist stemwinder that powered him through his successful primary campaign.

Reach out to minority voters? Nah. Display a more empathetic side to attract moderate Republicans, particularly suburban women? Not happening. Instead, Mr Trump was combative as ever - and the Phoenix crowd loved it.
Once Mr Trump got around to detailing the policy aspects in his "detailed policy address", he led with what, thanks to his surprise visit with President Enrique Pena Nieto, was already the topic of the day.

The Mexican border wall - that "impenetrable, physical , tall, powerful , beautiful" barrier, in Mr Trump's words - would be built, he promised.
Just hours earlier a much more subdued Trump had said he spoke about the border wall in a private meeting with the Mexican president, but the subject of financing hadn't been discussed. "That'll be for a later date," he said.
This had set off a firestorm of debate over why, exactly, the Republican candidate had seemingly backed down from what had been one of the signature aspects of his candidacy. Was this the Great Pivot to the political middle in action?

After he had put thousand miles between him and Mr Nieto, however, Mr Trump gave his answer.
"Mexico will pay for the wall," he said. "A hundred percent. They don't know it yet, but they're going to pay for it."

Yeah, so much for him softening his position. I read that when he first hinted at it he got some severe blowback from the Republican base. He knows he can't risk losing them in order to hopefully gain a few Latino votes.

Looks like he is going to ride the wall to the end and see how it plays out for him.

I heard a good quote this morning. "He's running for president of a room in Arizona".

Trump becomes whatever he needs to be based on who's in front of him at the time. Characteristic of a sociopath.

He wasn't breathing fire when he was in Mexico a few hours earlier. So in addition to being a sociopath, he's also a punk.

Mr Trump...you do realize people have access to media and can see/hear the things you said at one time -- then measure them against what you're saying now? No one is buying your horse shit except the trailer trash who has been with you from day one, and wouldn't change their minds if you were caught on video squashing kittens with your jackbooot.

Trump not backing down to any punk liberal and punk media.

If you actually paid attention to the speech he said all illegals with additional crimes gets the boot immediately. Check, nobody can argue that.
All existing laws will be implemented. Check, can't argue wanting to enforce current law.
Only way to citizenship is to go back to country and apply. That's fine and means no amnesty.

What you need to read between the lines is
.. illegal immigrants not causing problems will likely just be left alone. His speech was actually a way for 13 million people to have reason to not break us law. It was brilliant actually.

It's a no win situation for him. If he softens his stance his base will flip out and Democrats will call him a flip flopper. But without softening his stance he has no chance of winning over the groups he needs the most.

he would never say anything to get a bad crowd reaction during a rally. He lives for the positive feedback he's been getting by throngs of mouthbreathers. It's like a drug for him.

He needs to drop the rallies because he already has the type of people who show up for them. It's the thorn in his campaign's side because that's where all the bad press stems from usually. At this point, his campaign has become more a rock tour. There's no electoral strategy whatsoever.
