Gunman kills 1, wounds 2 officers in 'bizarre' Philly rampage




A gunman with an apparent hatred of police was shot and killed late Friday after going on a deadly rampage in West Philadelphia, killing one bystander and wounding three civilians and two police officers, including one hit at point-blank range by bullets fired into her protective vest.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross, calling the incident "completely bizarre," said the shooting began when the unidentified gunman ambushed Sgt. Sylvia Young as she sat in her patrol car.

"She didn't hear him say a word," Ross said.

Young, who was hit at least eight times in her protective vest and left arm, shouted "help me, please!" into her police radio moments after the attack, WCAU-TV reported.

After fleeing on foot, the suspect fired into a bar, hitting a security guard, then grabbed a female patron as a human shield before shooting her in the leg.

He then fired into a passing car, killing a woman and critically injuring a man before he was shot and killed by police in an alley.

Ed Miller, a former Philadelphia police officer now working for the University of Pennsylvania police force, was hit in the leg as he joined officers in cornering the suspect.

Young and Miller, who were listed in stable condition Saturday morning, were alert and speaking with family members, WCAU-TV reported.

Ross told reporters that police at the scene found a ?rambling? note they believe was written by the gunman in which he expressed hatred toward police and named a probation officer, Philly.com reported.

Ross said it appears that the gunman was acting alone but officers will now patrol in pairs, effective immediately.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney praised the police and pleaded with officers to follow Young?s example of wearing protective vests.

?Thank you for what you do for us every day, and please, please, please, every shift, please wear your vest,? he said. ?They will save your life, as we saw tonight.?

I don't mean to trivialize this incident, but.... One dead and two wounded is not a "rampage". It's a shooting.
