It will be interesting to see who starts suing the U.S. government

Here is what I don't understand. Say a family that was a victim of the 9/11 attacks sues the Saudi government and wins. And let's say the jury awards the victims $10 million dollars. If the Saudis refuse to pay, how are these people going to collect?

I would assume that any US based assets that belong to the offending party would be subject to civil asset forfeiture.

Opens up a can o worms for sure but it would be political suicide to vote against the veto and the 9/11 families

Makes sense. It seems to me like that could be big trouble for the US as a nation. If the Saudis lose a few cases and have assets seized to pay they might start thinking about pulling their assets out of the US and that could be ugly for our economy.

I think this will just be bad.

I feel for these people, and I suspect the Saudi government played a much larger role than we are lead to believe, but any lawsuit they have will go no where. The Saudi government will just bury them in legal bullshit.

At the same time, this will open up the United States to an unlimited amount of lawsuits until the end of time.

I think a flight of Saudi capital will have, negative, but only short term consequences economically. It's a small price to pay. To me, any movement towards cleansing ourselves of Saudi economic and political influence is a step in the right direction. If were actually serious about fighting terrorism then we are going to have to dismantle our interdependence with a culture that has done so much to spread the extreme wahhabist form of islam that has done so much to fuel it.

Interesting coincidence: hours later Iran and Saudi Arabia agree to oil production cuts at the OPEC meeting.

We will see what happens if the Saudis make good on their threat to repatriate or liquidate US based assets.

Enjoy your "good news"

It will be so sad when American oil companies have to actually ramp up production, hire more workers and make a profit rather than going bankrupt.

It goes to international court at that point or a judge in the US is forced to seize Saudi assets in the US. It would have to be one of those two options if I had to guess.

No matter what it will drag on for 20 years .
