Uber employment tribunal: Ruling due in London

Drivers for the cab-hailing firm Uber will learn later whether they are entitled to holiday pay, rest breaks and the National Living Wage.

An employment tribunal in London is due to rule on whether Uber is acting unlawfully by not giving drivers basic employment rights.

Uber says its drivers are self-employed and that they can choose where and when they drive.

The case could have big implications for Uber and similar businesses.

wtf does government have to meddle in everything? there is nothing at all wrong with the current setup... drivers are happy, customers are happy, uber is happy... now government had to come in and will likely fuck everything up... :-/

self-employment has lots of benefits. It rocks, compared to working a regular 9 to 5 job. It irks me when a self-employed person starts trying to get government benefits.

They've won

Uber drivers win key employment case - BBC News

Uber drivers in the UK have won an employment tribunal case which ruled they are workers rather than self-employed.

The decision means drivers will be entitled to holiday pay, paid rest breaks and the National Minimum Wage.

The GMB union described the ruling concerning the ride-hailing app as a "monumental victory" for some 30,000 drivers.

Uber said it would appeal against the decision made by the London tribunal.

The San Francisco-based ride company had argued that its drivers were not employees but self-employed contractors.

The landmark ruling could affect tens of thousands of people who work for companies with similar business models such as Deliveroo.

person A needs a ride, person B has a car.... uber does really nothing more than connect them together, while providing software, credit card billing, etc...

so if uber drivers are employees, then by the same logic, all the freelancers on outsourcing sites are employed by the outsourcing site too...
