Texas town spends 72 million on football statuim but doesn't have money for new school...

https://coveringkaty.com/2016/10/26/...ol-board-bind/

Gotta love it... It's is the most expensive High School football stadium in the world, running in at $72 million and still accumulating costs. Meanwhile the local elementary schools are over crowed and the school board can't figure out how to pay for a new planned school after spending an additional $12 million in surplus on the stadium..

Fucking idiots..

They spent $72 million on something that will make every dime of the $72 million back over it's lifetime.

The football stadium and basketball arena are the ONLY structures on campus that generate revenue.

People buy tickets to the games, buy snacks and knick-knacks, pay for parking and the schools sales ads on the scoreboard, stadium, etc...

It will create a Friday night bonanza for local restaurants, bars, hotels and other small business; thus helping the local economy.

Think bigger.

Like the rest of the non-revenue producing structures don't.

The cost to remove graffiti from the buildings in bored towns with no football is more.

You might have a point there.

Let's say seven hundred people attend each game and pay $15 each. That's $10,500. Then let's say the snack bar makes $5k, round it off..... Let's say $15k per game. My local high school plays ten games a year, that's $150k a year. For ten days of football.

But then.... Football is only played on Friday nights. On Saturdays, the youth league rents out the stadium. (The youth league pays for the stadium, but keeps entry fees and snack bar money.) So that's another $20k a year.

But that is only twenty days out of the year.

What about soccer? (Do they charge for soccer?) Baseball?

Then the school rents out the stadium for god only knows what. Our local high school rents out the parking lot for all kinds of things, special events, carnivals, "ham radio" sales, all kinds of shit.

Would they make $72 million back? Doubt it. They would have to make $2.4 million per year to pay it off in thirty years.

They dont care about paying it off. It's not an investment out of the school board's pockets. It's funded through tax bonds.

They don't play baseball in a football stadium.

Also at $150k a year they will have it paid off in short 480 years, great investment.. Hope they never have to hire anyone to cut the grass or do anything else much less do any upgrades or repairs.. might add an extra 100 years...

Elementary school education not so huge..

Makes much sense lets crowd hundreds of kids into class rooms and have sub par educations so 20 or 30 kids can play a game 10 or 15 nights a year.. Good priorities!!

This applies to most cities in the US. The local politicians are coining in.

Where do you come up with 750 people? It is fucking Texas; it is fucking high school football. Have you never read a book or watched a movie?

From the article - The stadium will open in 2017 and will seat 12,000 people. It was approved by voters in November 2014 as part of a $748 million school bond package.

That's after they reduced costs by removing 2,000 seats.

Rochard is thinking that they are expecting 700 spectators in 70 million stadium
I mean even if you did not read the article and don't know the capacity you would not dare to post 700 spectators when you see 70 million stadium

They don't play baseball in the stadium, but when they say "stadium" they usually mean "sports complex".

No, you get real. They don't spend 72 million plus on a stadium unless there is a serious demand and place to make revenue. Revenue that will not only go into the high school itself but into the grade schools because that's where their next generation of players come from.

Just because you don't like the sport itself doesn't make it less of a good business opportunity for the city as a whole.

Why do you think Harvard University spends money on their stadiums? Do they not take their educations seriously there too?

the USA spends 600 billion/ year on """""""""""""""""Defense"""""""""""""""""" (note how I put the word defense in many many quotation marks because anybody with an IQ higher than a chimp knows its not really defense but crony money pocket lining )

Yeah, God forbid they actually fill the 12,000 seats or raise the ticket price in 480 years.

I'd be will to bet Harvard wouldn't put a football stadium over class room space if they had students in classes that were already over crowed.

Call the "Education lottery" and ask them.

They advertise on TV to teach our kids to gamble for education profits instead of working on the football field to earn profits.

When people ask me about Texas, I say three words: barbecue, beer, football

Each of around the same importance.
