The sky is falling. Physically. Really. (pix)

I live in Northern California, it's been raining here all week, I'm sitting here working in my home office when suddenly the ceiling behind me crashes down..... I have two computer positions in my house and I on the other work station.

wow, lucky you weren´t under it...

is the insurance going to cover it? How bad is the damage above and to the roof?

Most likely not... I've since discovered that homeowners insurance covers burst pipes and storm damage, but not "leaky" roofs. In this case, this is a leaky roof. It has been raining a lot, storms, super windy, but no "obvious damage" like a tree falling and hitting the house or something like that.

We got a call from the claims department about our claim, and hopefully they will be here in the next 24 hours to look at it.

It seems to have soaked the insulation which got heavy. There wasn't any water that fell down, just the soaked insulation. The damage is limited to a small area thankfully.

A friend of mine just hit me up and reminded me he is a roofer so that might just come in handy.

make sure you get any wet insulation out of there as soon as you can and let the area dry up, maybe its not as bad as it seems. i had something similar but nothing fell down, yet i had to pull out multiple garbage bags full of wet insulation.

the bend in the ceiling looks like the fisheye style lens, probably not bending in reality. The straight lines is because it´s the whole of the plasterboard that´s come down, possibly not tacked correctly from the start, as there´s no wood braces above securing the board from left to right...

could mess about with insurance

shame to hear it´s not covered. Gary and I both would have thought a week of raining would have some clause in the insurance to cover this. Although as posted above, the plasterboard looks like it was originally fitted incorrectly, but too far in the image to be able to say for sure.

Hope you get it sorted, glad you and no one was hurt

Suggestion, since there was no known damage to the roof, check if the roof was done and when and if it had a warranty.

Just might help.
