The first Hollywood Movie with a $1 Billion Dollar Budget: Avengers Infinity War

Holy shit!

$1 Billion Dollar Budget:
502 Bad Gateway

It's supposed to combine all of the characters of the MCU. I wonder if that includes anyone from Agents of Shield too? (I hope so!)

I disagree, after all its just escapism. My feeling is we have enough issues in real life what with wars, famine, terrorists, illness etc. Its nice to literally escape from reality if only for an hour or two.

As a kid I grew up reading Marvel comics...wasn't much into DC or their characters. So it's great to have lived long enough to see all the Marvel heroes on the big screen with today's f/x technology.

Infinity War should be awesome.

I never read comics at all, but I loved many of the movies (Superman 1979 for example). The super hero shows in the 80's really sucked for me, but when Hulk came out in 2003, it really got my attention. Sure the VFX were weak in spots, but I loved the story. Then of course there was Iron Man, then Captain America, etc etc, and I was hooked.

On the DC side, I only really liked Superman and Batman.

All the Spiderman movies were "ok", but now that he has joined the MCU maybe it will be better. (

I watch every episode of Agents of Shield, and every Agent Carter too. Have not watched any of the Netflix shows yet.

I never really got into the X-MEN movies at all, though Deadpool was the clear exception. (And even though it was x-Men, it had lots of MCU references. I wonder if DP will cross over?

Anyway. Infinity War in 2018! YAARRGGHHH!!!

I hadn't heard about this, nice! I watched Civil War last week again, loved how they brought so many characters together. And I agree about AoS, would be great to see Agent May and Coulson kicking ass on the big screen.

The rebirth of Marvel would be a great documentary.

In the case of many of the Marvel movies, they are owned by Disney who is not going to be taking risks on many unknowns to begin with. In other cases, having a big blockbuster like this can give them the money to buy other smaller movies that they have to take a risk on because they are flush with cash.

These days, with VOD, iTunes, Netflix, Hulu and even places like Youtube and Vimeo there are plenty of ways for smaller independent movies to find an audience. If Disney decided not to make another Marvel or Star Wars movie it doesn't mean they would then invest that money into a bunch of other movies.

A Billion?

All lies and hype to get people into the theater.

These movies are 85% CGI. They are basically cartoons. There are very little sets, so the biggest fees are all in house, production and actors.

A Billion? Physically impossible.

That's what I was thinking....what are they spending a BILLION dollars on?

As LovinNothin just pointed out...it's all CGI and green screens.

It isn't like the old days where they had to do it all for "real" with sets and locales.

A billion dollars is a thousand million.

Somebody is lining their pockets on this project if that number is true. lol

That would be like the govt. spending billions on building a website...oh, wait a minute... heh-heh

I just read the article, it's 2 movies, for a total of $ 1B. So, $500M per flick seems about right with those high salaries.

Normally, production costs don't include marketing. $ 50 M average movie today, spends at least $18 to $25 M on ads.

$200 M monstah film, gets about $100M on ads. Gross $300M just to break even. Insane.

Saying that a movie has lots of CGI doesn't mean its cheap. Sometimes its cheaper to use CG than to use real sets, and other times it's just a necessity.

CGI costs money and employs alot of people. The next time you watch movie heavy on VFX, watch the credits. There are thousands of people in them sometimes.

Check this out:

This is from the movie "San Andreas" that came out last year. It's a typical disaster movie, nothing special, but - watch the VFX in this scene. Actually, look at the detail. Every single tiny thing is a polygon. Tiny CG people are running everywhere. When the land moves, it affects the water, which splashes against the bridge, which creates water dropplets, which reflect and refract light. Then there's the dust, and the smoke, and the fire. and the garbage in the water, and the waves.

There's action up front, and there's action way off in the distance. Some building is swaying over there and the glass is breaking, and oh there's a little desk flying out, etc.

Oh, and to top it all off, the camera has to have 100% free range of movement too. That is an insane amount of detail. I have no idea how they plan for all of this detail, let alone compose it and render it all for 10 seconds, but you can bet it's freaking expensive. Besides all of the artists that have to put all of those elements together, you have to then render it all after that. Amazing.

Check this out:

This VFX breakdown shows you all of the different elements (3d models, practical elements, particles, atmosphere, lighting etc). Cartoons? Of course. But highly detailed cartoons. Crazy, crazy money.

It was going to be 2 movies "Infinity War Pt 1" in 2018, and "Infinity War pt 2" in 2019, but it is no longer the case. ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Will Be Only One Movie | Variety

A movie filmed in front of a green screen? What the money is going to be spending at?

This is from Soviet movies about WWII filmed in 60's and 70's: no CGI at all - everything is for real (tanks, planes etc):

The mix from various Soviet movies (including animated fairy tales for children ) with heavy metal music by Sabaton
