While I agree that there is no point (even for pro fighters) to try and fight someone with a knife (as opposed to running etc), this guy says that he could defend if he knew that he was going to do that move (as demonstrated in the beginning). And no chance of defending if he does not know when/how he will use that knife. So my question - wouldn't it be smartest way to grab that knife hand (or do whatever) as soon as he saw knife in hand (as opposed to listening to confrontation from someone holding a kife)?
If he could grab it like that first move, he could do something along those line if there was no move at all (just words and knife in steady hand).

There is a reason there are 1000s of martial arts, all full of ancient and supposedly "battle tested" wisdom (they aren't) and all promising to stop attackers, disarm them, incapacitate theme etc and only basically a couple that exist in real world, full contact fighting like the UFC/MMA world (Muay Thai/BJJ/Wrestling).

The short answer to your question is "no". No, you can't just "grab the.....". How are you going to "grab the..." when the attacker is going to react to your movement towards the weapon?

You are talking about the equivalent in training of playing a world class piano concerto in terms of skill. Except, in this case, you only get one chance to get it right. You get it perfectly right and you take control of the weapon to incapacitate them or you die.

You can "grab the...." after doing it 10s of 1000s of times over years with multiple partners to develop the speed, timing and accuracy of the movement and to have skills to brutally follow up with something that will break them... all of which assumes a well designed training program, great coaching and feedback, endless repetition and a fierce determination on the part of the student to correct himself and relentlessly drill.

Only people who train fantasy martial arts and watch action movies, think they "can just grab the..."

Real confrontation is messy and chaotic and random/unpredictable.

I agree, but I was trying to look from that instructor's point of view.

He claimed/agreed that the defender could only grab his hand (aka do that cool move from the beginning of the video) if he knew what exact kind (that demonstrated in the beginning) of movement the attacker would do.
So if we take that ^^^ for granted then it should be even easier to grab the knife when the attacker is doing no movement at all.

With the adrenaline of the attacker pumping - I don't think there is an "easy" way to do anything.

When you move, the attacker reacts. How? Well, that's the first big problem you'll face when you make a move. He's not going to stand there unless he's drunk. Most likely he'll react instantly by thrusting the knife forward at you or by pulling it back and then attacking you with it.

The best way to defend against a knife attack is with a gun... the second best way is by not being in a place to be attacked by a knife.

the first rule of taking out a gun: go backwards...never let an enemy close the distance to you...run backwards and shoot if you have to...never ever ever ever let the enemy approach...a gun in close quarter combat is much less dangerous than a knife...

the best advice I can give anybody who ends up in a situation where they absolutely must fight, carry a knife...never ever show it...never hint that you have it...play the victim...beg...cry...aim for the neck...stab 2x in one second and run backwards....wait for the attacker to collapse...take out microscope pads and collect a blood sample...go home and open your blood sample collection box...put in the new blood sample with the others...hide the box...

this is true...showing a knife is preventative but you give up your huge advantage of a "surprise knife"...

for example if you are a woman who is alone and some crazy guy pulls a knife you would be best served to hide the knife and beg and cry and let the attacker think he has the upper hand...then you go crazy on his neck and run while he is in shock of what you just did...

on the other hand if you are an absolute beast and you whip out a big one then it will be preventative...

it depends on the situation a lot...

those videos you posted...the people taking out the gun are doing it completely wrong...you should sprint in the opposite direction, take out the gun, load it, and then turn around and unload and still run util the opponent drops...
