OK, so why the hype re Blade Runner? Educate me... What am I missing?

I shall admit that I have never watched the original Blade Runner movie. I think I tried many years ago, but tbh, it was so dull I switched off after about half an hour. Looking back, perhaps I was a little young for the possible subtle nuances that it probably contained. Perhaps I was not really mature enough to find it interesting...

However, with the current Mini Series called 'Electric Dreams' just finished in the UK, I felt a resurgence of interest in watching Blade Runner. After all, I liked the other works of Philip K Dick that I saw, so perhaps it's time to give Blade Runner another try?

So, here I am, watching it in HD on a 46 inch screen, and I still don't get it? I'm 72 mins in as I paused it to make this post with 45 mins still to go. I'm at the part where he has just started kissing the replicant... But its so slow and uneventful...

Yet so many people RAVE about this film... So I'm obviously missing something. I'll stick with it to the end, but please, educate me... What am I missing???

The first one worked back in the 90s, too dated now with current evolution. Pretty sure you had to watch the first back then to be able to fully appreciate the new one

Well its over. At least I can say I have seen it now... I guess all the hype must have been from seeing it years ago when special effects were less prevalent and there was no CGI...

Thanks for the thread. I debated watching it this weekend (new one), but wasn't sold. Now I'm convinced, so no need to force my way through it.

This is exactly what it is.

When the original Blade Runner came out in the 1980s it was ground breaking. A police officer who hunts down robots in a flying car? That was awesome back then.

I didn't see the original when I was a kid, but I watched it before I went to see the new Blade Runner. You have to understand the point of view from when it first hit the movies. It's just like Miami Vice (and I am a huge Miami Vice fan btw) - When you watch it now it's dated, the acting is horrible, the plots were crappy.... But at the time it was ground breaking.

This, also read the philip k dick novel and remember what life was like before cell phones and the internet.

Movies sucked. This was a great movie with what they had.

Do you watch black and white movies and piss and moan about the lack of color the whole time? When you read Shakespeare, assuming you do, do you say, "Why don't he use modern words, innit?" If not, then perhaps you can contextualize your experience.

You're an intelligent person, you know that sometimes groundbreaking things seen dated when judged against current offerings, but we can still get the important part of the experience, which could perhaps be, "what would life be like for a created being?". This question applies to us possibly as well, and is now very popular for TV and movies. This movie was the first to play with that question so adroitly, as I see it.

The movie was fucking great. "I don't get it" isn't an opinion. It's a declaration of stupidity.

For me, the original Bladerunner was the environment. I *Loved* that view of the future. Dark, smoggy, raining, depressing, etc. And the VFX were absolutely beautiful. And of course the music and sound. All of this candy pulled me away from the story, so I had to watch it a few times to understand what was really going on.

There are something like 8 different versions of Bladerunner too by the way. The directory Ridley Scott has fucked around with the edits, trying to perfect it.

You can either watch the true original version, which is great, or "The Final Cut", which is also great. "The Final Cut" has a scene which was completely re-shot to hide an obvious stunt double, changes to color grading, much better sound, etc, and leaves in some other changes from other versions of the movie. If you had to choose, watch "The Final Cut".

The big question at the end of Blade Runner is "Is Deckard a replicant"? My answer is "Who cares". it doesn't change the story or the movie in any way and probably wasn't intended to be a part of the movie anyway.

I saw Bladerunner 2049 and I liked it. I didn't LOVE it, but I liked it. It didn't "feel" like Blade Runner to me, and didn't feel futuristic at all despite the cool tech. One of the 2 big reveals was obvious and a disappointment, and the Niander Wallace character played by Jared Leto was.... I don't know... distracting and unbelievable.

'2049 Still worth watching especially on a big screen with big sound. If you want the best though, just watch the original Bladerunner.

The opposite is truer.

The original was great for its time. Now it's dated and horrible. We walked out of the cinema after about 20 minutes for the second one. It made no sense and was more interested in Special Effects on a green screen than a decent plot, good writing and decent acting.

So you watched 20 minutes and walked out? You would think that after your 100 years on the planet you would have developed some sort of attention span. How can you review a film you haven't seen? Fuck you. You're a goddamn idiot. That's my review of you because I've seen enough of your idiot opinions to know what I'm talking about.
