(WASHINGTON) -- Secretary of Defense James Mattis announced a historic nomination from the president on Tuesday.

If confirmed, Marine Corps Col. Lorna M. Mahlock will be the first African-American female to serve as brigadier general, according to the Marine Corps office of public affairs.

Right now, Mahlock is the deputy director of operations, plans, policies and operations directorate at the Marine Corps' headquarters in Washington, D.C., according to a press release.

The Marine Corps is the smallest of the four military services, and the branch has the fewest female service members, according to the Marine Corps Community Services.

Women make up just 8 percent of the Marine Corps, but that percentage is likely to increase, according to Gen. Glenn Walters, the assistant commandant of the Marine Corps.

Last year, the Marine Corps made history by welcoming its first female infantry officer. The woman, who wished to be unnamed, was the first female to finish training for a military occupational specialty (MOS), which was opened up to women in April 2016.

And it was only three years ago when the Pentagon historically made all combat jobs available to women.

"When we opened this Wall Street project and we talked about it, you gave us face at 40 Wall Street, which was to make a statement about our having a presence there," said Jackson. "Beyond that in terms of reaching out and being inclusive, he’s done that, too."

Jackson also applauded Trump’s "will to make things better" for the "underserved communities." In addition, Jackson thanked Trump for meeting with him in 1984 and in 1988 when he ran for president at a time when the United States would’ve found the idea of a black president "laughable."

I've never thought Trump is a racist. I do think he is ignorant. By that I mean he has lived a life of privilege. He was born into a wealthy family, he went to the best schools, then he started his own business. He has no idea what it is like to struggle financially or to struggle to improve yourself and make something of yourself and he has no idea what it is like to be anything other than a wealthy white dude.

So, I don't think he is racist. I do think he looks a poor black people and, in not so many words, thinks to himself, "Why don't they just get a small loan of a couple million from their dad and start a business?"

Sexist, on the other hand, is a different story. He is no doubt a sexist.

I'm not a white apologist in any way shape or form. The reality is that Trump grew up in a rich white family surrounded by other rich white people. It's not his fault (at least when he was younger) it's just his life experience. It's why I say he isn't a racist. He just doesn't know any better.
