Relative's DNA from genealogy websites cracked East Area Rapist case

Sacramento investigators tracked down East Area Rapist suspect Joseph James DeAngelo using genealogical websites that contained genetic information from a relative, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office confirmed Thursday.

The effort was part of a painstaking process that began by using DNA from one of the crime scenes from years ago and comparing it to genetic profiles available online through various websites that cater to individuals wanting to know more about their family backgrounds by accepting DNA samples from them, said Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Grippi.

The investigation was conducted over a long period of time as officials in Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert's office and crime lab explored online family trees that appeared to have matches to DNA samples from the East Area Rapist's crimes, Grippi said. They then followed clues to individuals in the family trees to determine whether they were potential suspects.

The process finally came to fruition last Thursday, when the investigation focused on the possibility that DeAngelo might be a suspect, a suspicion that was bolstered by the fact that he had lived in areas where the attacks occurred and was in the right age range, Grippi said

I've got nothing to worry about all. I've never hurt a fly. I've never been arrested.

But it's got to put the fear of god into anyone who has ever committed a rape or murder, or any other serious crime. If they have DNA on file it's only a matter of time before they can trace it to someone. At this point it's very likely that someone in their family has turned in their DNA to some such website and it's only a matter of time before they get caught.

More realistically : Joe Blow's 5th cousin, that he never met, commits a crime and a 3rd cousin submits to ancestry.com; the
police then put surveillance on Joe Blow trying to get DNA to match.
The police go through Joe Blow's garbage and invade his privacy.
And when Joe Blow's is followed by undercover cops trying to secretly collect his DNA; Joe Blow doesn't know they are cops
and thinks they are robbers. So he shoots the cops.

I've always assumed ansertey.com was a honey pot.. No way with all the spying our govt is doing would they let a resource like that go untapped..

They are tracking cell phones with out warrants, it's a given they'd go after a massive DNA database..

I mean seriously I wouldn't be surprised if the CIA set up the site, same with Facebook..

What better way to get all the info you could ever need from most of the world is to get them to give it to you willingly.

True once things are set in motion they can have unforseen consequences. Like whoever gave that boy the toy gun for his birthday, he goes outside playing with it at the park, shot dead by cops 3 seconds after they exit the squad car.

If someone calls in saying "I think he has a gun" then that's enough for the cops to shoot
