This is becoming more and more common. It's getting hotter out, and getting dryer out. Here in California fires are a constant. At some point in time a fire will get out of control and destroy multiple large cities and kill tens of thousands....

It's like here (Spain), problem is if you grub up all the bushes on the hills, you get terrible erosion when it rains.

We've had load of rain all over the country, so this years been pretty good for fires, but it's warming up, so they will start soon.

My brother lives on the West coast in BC and the fires are out of control. It's so bad that soot is blowing through the air hundreds of miles away from the fires making it harder to breathe.

That sucks for them. I was watching some news video yesterday and I caught the tail end of the segment on the fires there. They were asking for international aide for fires and I was kinda like WTF, how can a country need international aid because of fires.. I guess they are pretty big.

That kind of thing happens all the time in the west here in the states, so I guess we are better prepared for it or something. In fact I'm pretty sure there are big fires up in OR & even CA right now but it's like "typical" news..

The people in these pictures are the reason they have such a high death toll.. It's very obvious they are in the path of that fire but instead of evacuating they are standing there watching it come to them.. You can look at the direction the smoke it going to know it's heading right at these people standing around like jackasses...

This is a constant for us here. The effort to fight this is massive.

If I understand correctly there is a shared resources system where local fire departments are required to pitch in firemen, trucks, etc.... Every now and then we can see them in convoys on freeway when they go down to Southern California.

And they are super quick to respond to any fire. I am friends with a local fire Captain here and I had the chance to ride along with them last spring and it was eye opening.

A handful of Spartans and Athenians once held a pass against a terrifying number, which cemented them into legend for all of human time.

Their descendants cant put out a fire without having some slavshits help them.

It's horrible, but I don't really understand the death toll rate.

Fire is not as fast as an earthquake, tsunami etc. or am I wrong?

It sure can, just look at the picture above of the people standing there watching the fire, wind gust comes up and blows their way, it could be up that hill and around them in seconds. Ahead of any big fire like that is a billowing blast furnace heat with millions of embers that torch anything they touch. Here in Aus they have recorded wildfires moving at more than 70mph, good luck trying to out run that.

https://www.science.org.au/curious/bushfires

Fire moves faster uphill because there is less space between the flames and new fuel to burn. Also, the radiant heat caused by the fire pre-heats the fuel, making it easier to ignite, also in general, a wider fire will burn faster than a very narrow one. The heat of the fire can cause thunderstorms or pyrocumulus clouds. These can produce lightning strikes, which can start new fires. With the right combination of atmospheric conditions, fire tornadoes can be created. These can have wind speeds of greater than 250 km/h and are extremely destructive.

Don't play with matches

people were told to stay in their homes

also, many probably died of smoke inhalation & not the fire...

it can be that some people died in their homes, their homes are fine but they were smoke filled

Hey folks, someone from Greece...

Yes, last week fires was a huge tragedy ... all things did very very fast and the air was so fast about 11 Beaufort!!!! So fire stars and goes wild where people have homes near the sea... many they fell in the sea and they killed there from the water... at the same time in Athens, we had more fires to other places at the same time...

Now we talk about 90+ dead people and still counting...
