2018 End of year movie recommendations

To me, this was the best year for movies since 1999. I saw so many movies I loved. Some were blockbusters and some were tiny low budget movies but there were some good ones.

List the ones that really stood out to you.

If you liked Beyond the Black Rainbow then you should check out that director's latest movie, Mandy. It's trippy, violent, crazy and Nic Cage at his Nic Cagiest.

Revnege is about a lot more than it looks like. Awesome blood-soaked thriller with only 4 characters in the desert.

This movie wasn't on my radar unti lI saw it popping up lots of ten best lists. I'm one of those people who wish they would stop making Spiderman movies, but this was better than any other Marvel movie I've seen since Guardians of the Galaxy. Walked out thinking I just saw a great movie.

Some cool shit here. See it if you haven't.

Herditary is a weird movie and you'll understand if you make it to the last 10 minutes. I wasn't prepared for that shit at all.

Some others

Mission Impossible Fallout
Annhiliation
Eighth Grade
Isle of Dogs
Apostle
Incredbles 2
Roma
You Were Never Really Here

That's just the ones I can remember.

Nice, i was looking for good recommendations. Tho, when it comes to this year, it sucked for SCFI genre, beside marvel movies there was nothing good.

NOT 'Bird Box'...

Would have been better as a 6 part miniseries, and it certainly shouldn't have had a happy ending...

For someone who likes good acting, good direction, good story line, 2018 sucked. I don't like horror, sci fi unless done very well and DC comic heroes.

Was forced to watch Roma. The worst case of director's masturbation over nothing ever put on digital media....Snobs though will love it and it probably will get an Oscar.

Best / most enjoyable movie i've seen recently: Bad times at the El Royale

Can't think of anything that really stood out for me in terms of movies last year to be honest. Went to the cinema only a few times probably. And probably half of those times I fell asleep...

I don't get to the movies very often and looks like this year I was just unlucky with movie choices. The last one was Aquaman and that movie was a joke... with zero actual humor. So disappointing.

YES!!! Same fucking thing, right fucking here. I have already informed my spouse that I plan to buy tickets for the premiere midnight showings of both Captain Marvel, And Infinity War Part 2 / Avengers: Endgame. I want to watch both of these movies in a threatre cram-jammed with rabid fans like I am, just like this:

(but hopefully not sitting next to the annoying "oh shit" guy)

I expect Captain Marvel to me "so-so" as far as Marvel movies go, but it doesn't matter because it, or maybe the post-credit scene, will tease Avengers: Endgame.

I watched Ant Man and the Wasp last summer in the theatre. It was "so-so", and not my favourite MCU by any stretch. But the end credit scene thrilled the whole audience, and satisfied the hell out of me.

By the time Avengers: Infinity War came out I had a serious case of Marvel fatigue. I still went to see it, and thought it was good -- but I really didn't think about it 10 mnutes after I left the theater.

Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse was a whole different experience. So different than the other Marvel movies and it stcuk with me a few days after seeing it.

Just watched Unsane last night, which is the only Steven Soderbergh movie I hadn't seen yet. Really good flick...supposedly shot on an iPhone.

The most ultimate case of stalking ever put into a movie. Is she crazy? Maybe she's not. It'll keep you wondering the entire way through.

Anyway if you miss watching a good old fashioned Soderbergh movie, then checktout.

Just the opposite for me. I was following everything about it but stopped in December because I want to avoid any more spoilers.

Really? Ok then maybe I will check this out. I didn't really have any interest in it since its not a part of the MCU but I keep hearing great things about it so maybe I'll check it out while its still in the theatre.

I was really into Herditary, UNTIL the last 10 minutes. I found the ending kind of disappointing but maybe I didn't get it.

Annihilation was good too but the ending was a cop-out. I won't spoil it but... but but... ARGH. Anyway.

It's on lots of ten best list for a reason. One of those rare theater experiences I just done have as often as I used to. And this is coming from someone who didn't have this film on his radar and had zero interest in seeing it when I originally saw the trailers.

There's nothing that deep to get really. The whole thing was a setup to go hog wild at the end. If you want to understand what was going on, think about the title "Hereditary". I always love when I get something I wasn't expecting. That's the case with both Annihilation and Herditary.

The ending of Annihilation, and I mean the very very last few frames, was a let down for me. I read later that the last few frames were forced into the movie by the production company execs. I think it would have been better without the last little bit, but.. oh well.

For Hereditary, maybe it deserves a second viewing. I tend to like movies after a second viewing that I didn't care for the first time.

Bollocks.

2018 for me was a great year for TV series. Good acting. directing and a script that didn't rely on special effects.

Can't make your own lists? You're so full of shit.

And just because something is nominated for an award doesn't necessarliy mean it's good. What have YOU seen that YOU think is good?

So there's no good movies because TV was the thing which was good this year? What kind of fucking logic is that?

Honestly, I don't think you would know what art was good if it rented space up your ass.

I think that was the strangest post I've ever seen Paul make.

A direct link to shows nominated by the Golden Globes as a list of all movies he personally liked in 2018.

A direct link to The Guardian of their 50 best TV shows list of 2018 as a list of TV shows that he liked. Bizarre

Out of all of the movies recommended by Bronco67, the only one I've seen is Mission Impossible - which was awesome. Bohemian Rhapsody was my favorite, but I am a huge Queen fan. Some of my other favorites were Black Panther, Avengers, First Man, and Clint Eastwood's "The Mule".

On this fine rainy Sunday morning I am working from my laptop in the master bedroom watching Wonder Woman. Yum.

Asking a board like this what movies they recommend is always going to pull up Horrors, special affects, green screen dominated movies. Movies that rely on a very set writing and the audience knows the outcome before the end, in fact before the start. Wouldn't be amazing if the bad guys won occasionally like they do in real life?

Winners of Golden Globes and Oscars where awards are given for acting, writing, directing and not based on ticket sales is what I personally like.

Agreed these are the type of movies and TV shows I personally liked in 2018.

I can see why the cinema has gone for 3D, special affects, green screen, etc. Because watching these movies at home gives a very second rate experience. But I don't like these movies generally. The last movie we saw was Bohemian Rhapsody, which we all enjoyed even our 16 year old daughter.

Glad to see this one on your list. Really enjoyed it!

Other good ones:
Black Mirror - Bandersnatch: Not up there with the best Black Mirror eps for me, but still quite an experience
Three Identical Strangers: Great documentary that stuck with me
Love, Simon
Searching
Upgrade
Deadpool 2
Sicario: Day of the Soldado
Game Night: Best comedy of the year!
Mission Impossible - Fallout: Best action/thriller of the year
A Quiet Place
Avengers - Infinity War
Jurassic World - Fallen Kingdom: Nostalgia that didn't disappoint
The Predator: Not a great movie, but great fun

It depends on the movie and the crowd... have you ever been to a screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show? If you want to see people out-drama queen each other....

Rocky Horror is to be expected...it's a classic cult film reknown for the crowd participation.

Years ago I often got special VIP passes to world premiere movies at the Cineplex at Bloor cinemas in Toronto (had a relative that worked at Cineplex head office). And crowds never behaved that way in the theaters, even with celebrities in the crowd.

Again, it depends on the movie, and the fanbase I think. Or maybe its just Canadians? Wh o knows. I remember people cheering at Wrath of Khan, Back to the Future, etc. And as far as the Marvel movies go, People applauded during some movies, cheered during other movies. People were mostly quiet during Ant-Man and the Wasp but gasped during the post credit scene. In Finity War there was lots of applause, but no freak-outs like in the reaction video.

PS I finally got around to seeing Aquaman yesterday. It was good! I really thought it was going to suck as many of the current DC movies are kind of lame, but I was surprised. It's fun and has a nice story. It also makes really great use of 3D and Atmos sound. And overall it looks like they really spent a ton of money on this movie. It shows. Worth a night out especially with kiddies.

I just checked my local Dolby Atmos theater to see if Aquaman was running and they have Mary Poppins in there. What a fucking waste. Looks I'll be waiting for home viewing.

Finally got through Bird Box tonight. There's some bad things about it, but I wasn't totally sorry I watched it. That's about the best I could say about it.

As general rule, I don't carry any baggage into a movie. I start watching with the desire to like it and it's the movie's job to not lose that initial good will. The majority of the time I find that most movies are enjoyable in their own way, even if I know they're not actually good by any objective, measurable standard. One of the only things that will make me dislike a movie is if it starts strong but finishes with a whimper. There's been so many times when I wasn't feeling a movie and it won me over in the last act...sometimes in the last few minutes or seconds. If a movie ends well, then all else is forgiven.

Bid Box didn't end very well.

I don't watch many movies, loved Black Panther. Mission Impossible was good, too.

I guess I'm the only person who thinks Black Panther is one the most overrated movies in a long time. It's a serviceable Marvel movie and that's about it. The CG fight with BP vs Killmonger was early 2000's level bad. But I could overlook that if I actually gave a shit about T'Challa.

It seems to be on every ten best list but I'm not getting it.

Mission Impossible though....that's the shit right there.

I went to it thinking it would suck ass, was very pleasantly surprised. Didn't care for the latest Avengers at all.

Black Panther was "ok" to me. Sly can you tell me why you loved it? Were their moments in the film that stood out for you? Maybe I need to watch it again but I didn't love the movie as much as others seem to, and I'm a die-hard MCU fan. To me, "The Winter Soldier" is the best of the MCU. Seen it 10 times, Fucking love it.

Mission Impossible was great.

Winter Soldier reminded me of a good 70's political thriller like Day of the Jackal. Something about the tone of it. Good movie...and I've also seen it quite a few times. LOVE the elevator scene.
