The bizarre thing is that he doesn't even seem to have contemplated getting caught and how he might explain it. He has to have some deep personality disorders and substance abuse issues to not even contemplate the consequences for just a few seconds.

Mailing himself a threat was really over the top as anyone should understand that doing anything via the postal service is always a serious crime. There is an interesting argument however that it's unclear what the charges will be since he basically threatened himself.

No aspect of anything they did was thought through, much less even believable in the manner in which it was executed.
