John Wayne Was A Racist Homophobe

I think the truth about him is coming to light. He wasn’t so perfect as everyone thought. Airports should be named after heroes and not actors who did little other than act.

Airplane pilot Sully, who landed the plane on the Potomac River safely is the first name I thought of. Two hundred people lived because of him.

Sadly, I reread the bold statement several times and understand his meaning. He stupidly said it wrong. He wants educated people and not illiterate people. Back then, black folks were portrayed as uneducated, stupid, and criminal and no one challenged them until Martin Luther King. John Wayne saw black people only when needing work done. No one in power at television stations or networks, no one in charge anywhere. He’s a product of his upbringing.

John Wayne's son defends father over homophobic slur from 1971 article

Ethan Wayne appeared on CNN on Saturday to defend his late father, famed actor John Wayneha

A 1971 interview John Wayne gave to Playboy showed the prejudice the actor had towards gays, blacks, Native Americans, young people and liberals

John Wayne Airport is the official name for Orange County airport in Santa Anaha

With such outdated, unpopular views, there are calls for airport to be renamed

Ethan Wayne acknowledged that his father's remarks about 'perverted' movies were 'terrible,' but he denied John Wayne was a racist.

John Wayne’s son says a 1971 Playboy interview in which the famed actor says he ‘believes in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility’ was ‘used out of context.’

Ethan Wayne on Saturday defended his late father, the Oscar-winning star of True Grit and Sands of Iwo Jima, who died of stomach cancer in 1979.

John Wayne’s controversial comments about African Americans, homosexuals, and Native Americans in the interview have prompted calls to remove his name from an airport in Santa Ana, California.

‘It would be an injustice to judge someone based on an interview that's being used out of context,’ Ethan Wayne told CNN on Saturday.

‘They're trying to contradict how he lived his life, and how he lived his life was who he was.
‘So, any discussion of removing his name from the airport should include the full picture of the life of John Wayne and not be based on a single outlier interview from half a century ago.’
In the Playboy interview, John Wayne said he 'He went onto say that he even believed black people had more advantages in America than whites.

But the insults didn't stop there.

When asked which films he considered ‘perverted’, Wayne listed 1969's Easy Rider and Midnight Cowboy, before using anti-gay slurs in discussing the films further.

Even though the interview is nearly 50 years old, Twitter users resurrected some excerpts, which went viral last month.

When asked about the ‘perverted’ comment, Ethan Wayne, who is also an actor who has appeared in films such as The Blues Brothers, Longshot, and Scream, acknowledged that his father ‘used a terrible word, no doubt about it.’

‘But he used it not in the context of an individual's sexuality,’ he said.

‘He used it in the context of the changing landscape of the motion picture business, something that distressed him.

‘My father worked in Hollywood for 50 years, and Hollywood is probably, you know, one of the most progressive and diverse communities on Earth.
‘He didn't care what race, gender, sexual orientation you were.
‘He cared how well you did your job. He took everyone at face value.’

The outrage on social media ignited renewed debate in Orange County, California over what should be done about John Wayne Airport.

'Orange County today is such an economically and ethnically diverse community that it's hard to justify asking any member of that community to board planes at an airport named after an outspoken racist and homophobe, with his strutting statue occupying a central niche in front of the concourse,' wrote columnist Michael Hiltzik wrote in a Los Angeles Times opinion piece.
Hiltzik wrote how in 1979, Orange County was a strongly conservative area which may have influenced the decision to name after Wayne - a hero of Westerns and outspoken conservative.

Once the name was chosen, the John Wayne Associates commissioned sculptor Robert Summers to create a nine foot bronze statue of 'the Duke' - which remains in the Thomas F. Riley Terminal on the Arrival Level to this day.

But the area's demographic has long since changed with a more liberal and progressive community making up the majority of the population.

'That should be evident from the results of November's election, in which voters turfed out the county's last remaining GOP members of Congress — some of whom had embraced Donald Trump in a fruitless effort to save their careers- and elected an all-Democratic congressional delegation,' Hiltzik wrote.

But Ethan Wayne insists that his father’s name should remain attached to the airport.
‘They put my father's name on that airport for the same reason that Congress voted to give him a Congressional Gold Medal, for the same reason that the President decided to give him a Medal of Freedom.
‘And it's recognition of a lifetime of significant contributions to this country, his community and to his industry.’ha

JOHN WAYNE'S CONTROVERSIAL COMMENTS FROM INTERVIEW
In a 1971 interview with Playboy magazine, Wayne made several offensive comments about black people and Native Americans. Below are a few quotes from the interview:ha

'We can't all of a sudden get down on our knees and turn everything over to the leadership of the blacks. I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people.'

'I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them, if that's what you're asking. Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.'

'When you allow unlawful acts to go unpunished, you're moving toward a government of men rather than a government of law; you're moving toward anarchy. And that's exactly what we're doing. We allow dirty loudmouths to publicly call policemen pigs; we let a fella like William Kunstler make a speech to the Black Panthers saying that the ghetto is theirs, and that if police come into it, they have a right to shoot them. Why is that dirty, no-good son of a bitch allowed to practice law?'ha

'I don't feel guilty about the fact that five or 10 generations ago these people were slaves. Now, I'm not condoning slavery. It's just a fact of life, like the kid who gets infantile paralysis and has to wear braces so he can't play football with the rest of us.'ha

'The academic community has developed certain tests that determine whether the blacks are sufficiently equipped scholastically. But some blacks have tried to force the issue and enter college when they haven't passed the tests and don't have the requisite background

Sorry to burst your bubble but John Wayne was Gay.

I live here in Orange County California and the fight over the John Wayne airport name is really about conservative Orange county going blue Democrat and not wanting to have a perceived bigots name on an airport.

He got a film role once that got him tons of straight bible belt fans and he rolled with it for the rest of his career. But, in real life, John Wayne was Gay and he was known for having a big dick. This is well known in Hollywood.

Here are some pics of John Wayne

Well he was married to and had children with a Mexican and a Peruvian, so he couldn't have been that racist.

Pam is a controlled soul in zombie state driven by stuff that doesn't matter at all to anyone and isn't important whatsoever, just to divide people. She is a severe victim of the MSM narrative. Example: The Daily Show. It is the most racist mainstream media show in existence today, disguising as a show to fight something that doesn't exist at all on the scale they try to make you believe it does. It is KKK TV to the core (except the other way around) and it's disgusting. Trevor Noah is useful idiot, i cannot think of anyone in MSM who is more ignorant and oblivious than him.

Yes, you’re right, of course. Posting topics that generate discussion and opinions is due to being controlled by something that exists in your mind only.

I’ve never seen The Daily Show so don’t know or care what you’re blathering about.

The post isn’t to divide people. It’s simply a story in the news that may surprise people as they think of John Wayne as a hero cowboy. It isn’t important to anyone, it’s merely a discussion post. Of course, you’re not from the USA so don’t know his fan base You just like to relieve your boring life by putting people down and trying to cause anger.

When an anonymous troll calls me something funny, I laugh. Sorry I’m not in tears over your attempt at enjoyment. Trolls try to invent theories and insist they’re correct.

If you don’t like my topics of discussion, there is a button you can touch to not see them. It says OFF. Or, ignore. Either way, your post made me laugh.

I’d read that in some gay magazine in the early nineties. An actress claimed that he had ten inches and a few older gay pornstars said the same. I’d say he was bisexual since he had kids and marriages.

Then again, many gay men have kids and marry. Artificial insemination or secret lovers for the kids and future wealth for the silent bride. A million dollars a year to keep quiet keeps kips shut.

This is an interesting story. John Wayne was a hero to nearly all of America. However, we need to remember that it was a vastly different America than we have now. There was a time when everyone in the country was racist to some degree. We see this now as being wrong, but decades ago not only was it not considered wrong, it was perfectly acceptable and encouraged to a large degree.

On one hand we shouldn't give credit to those are who are racists, bigots, and homophobes. On the other hand, we cannot erase and should not forget our past. If we were to remove monuments and erase the history of those racists, bigots, and homophobes... We would be removing a lot of our history.

They are naming airports after leaders that killed millions of people.
When will they change "Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport"?
Done some good things, and some bad things if you look back a lot of years ago.

So what you are really saying is, "John Wayne was born in 1907," or?

His words were very clear. No room for misinterpretation.

It's because of the resurgence of racism from the right wing, now everyone is hyper sensitive to anything revolving racism or bigotory.. You can thank Trump for this.

It's same reason all those confederate statues got taken down, that was direct result in racist feeling emboldened so the people pushed back sent them to the corner and took their toys away.

None of this would have happened with out Trump pushing his hate agenda...

I'm so sick of digging up things from the past and banning them. So are western channels going to stop showing all Wayne movies cause of this.. I'm so over all the PC crap!

I'm sick of the PC crap too.

I've been banned from 2 liberal Democratic political sites because I didn't speak PC enough or wasn't "liberal" enough.

Times do change though and both political sides want to rewrite history which we all should fight against IMO.

My step Grandma was racist too. she was the only real grandmother figure I knew I'd seen my maternal grandmother two times in my life at that point.

I'll never forget the first time I heard the word n**ger I was 6 and it was Christmas and we had just open a Christmas tin of salted mixed nuts. I picked out a Brazil nut. My step Grandma said "Do you know what this is called?" I said "no". She said "It's called a n**ger toe". She was sweet as pie and the quintessential grandmother, other than the racist part.

The racist part of her doesn't negate the rest of her. In my experience with her it was a small part of who she was that reared its ugly head very rarely. When it reared its head it really impacted me though, as in seeing a hateful part of a wonderful sweet woman. I grew to see it as a defect, like an alcoholic or drug user. Racism is a human defect that all races suffer from.

These are Brazil nuts btw

My grandparents on my mother’s side were the same. Lived in a Russian and Jewish neighborhood and moved to Mattapan which was Jewish and Italian. Yes, Mattapan and Roxbury used to be mostly Jews. Right before I was born, the black people began moving in and mostly all moved out. They didn’t get to know anyone but moved because they didn’t want to be surrounded by blacks.

My Russian great grandmother spoke little English but refused to move. She said she came here and people didn’t like Russians. She stayed and survived. Why should she move because they are black? Give them a chance. She never had any issues with anyone there. She treated everyone with respect and in turn they did the same.

I took her words and still do accept people as they are.

Older folks back then only saw black people in bad scenarios. I understand that and if raised that way, it’s hard to change.

I never thought of John Wayne as a hero but remember something about his anger at Native Americans being mistreated or something. I thought it would make an interesting discussion of opinions as to celebrity interviews and our current times.

The media is full of stories of gangs of black kids, groups of black kids, with quotes of neighbors who knew they were bad. A story of white kids always has quotes from neighbors saying how surprised they are and they’re not that kind of kid .

Times have changed. Back then, a different opinion meant parents would smack you to shut up. Their word was law an punishment was severe.

I'm so sick of digging up things from the past and banning them. So are western channels going to stop showing all Wayne movies cause of this.. I'm so over all the PC crap!
Roseanne said something about black people and her show in reruns was taken down. She left the current show to save it.

TVLand made a huge deal and cancelled her reruns. Yeah, for two weeks.i watch her reruns on weekends and if ratings were poor, they’d switch shows.

People say stupid things when younger but someone needs to tarnish their name and bring it up. It’s done here, too. People look up old posts to bash posters.

If this story goes big, they’ll pull his movies for a while. They’re only hurting the advertisers. I doubt John Wayne’s heirs make money from his old movies.

Your grandmother and my bubbe learned that they were brought up to dislike someone but as they aged, realized that they are just like everyone.

Pretty normal for GFY.
No one on GFY is mad about it. They are talking about changing the name of an airport in Southern California. Most of us who actually work in the industry have flown out of that airport.

Roseanne is different.. She said those comments in 2018 when she should've known she can't say those things anymore.

I hate when they get on comedians for jokes they made 15-20 years ago too.

I missed the post. I’m not mad! I think it’s worth discussing

True. But the network talked big and pulled her reruns until it hit their pocket.

I remember hearing my grandmother use the term ni**er rich a few times, was she racist? Maybe. But I never heard her talk down about black people. 20 years ago I was living with my girlfriend and her grandparents from Texas visited. They were huge bible thumpers to the point her grandma carried a bible in her hand constantly. For 3 days all she talked about was ni**er this, ni**er that, Jesus this, Jesus that. Jesus hated the ni**ers, etc. Gotta love those Texan racist hypocritical southern Christians.

That's kind of like you, right? I remember you saying you had a choice to live in a few cities that were very diverse ( lots of blacks and brown peeps) and the one town you actually chose was 99.4% white.

I guess it's what they call learned behavior.

Ah yes the hypocritical Christians who justified slavery by preaching in church that black people are black because their souls were burning in hell and god brought them back to earth to be our slaves to make up for their sins. Sad. Religion sucks and is to blame for so much death & suffering on earth.
