ICE officers came for a Tennessee man. His neighbors stepped in to stop them

(CNN)When US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers tried to take a Tennessee man into custody early Monday morning, the man's neighbors stepped up to stop them, CNN affiliates WTVF and WZTV reported.

An ICE vehicle had followed the man's van, trying to pull it over, and then blocked it in when the van driver pulled up to a house in Hermitage, near Nashville, the affiliates said. The driver alerted immigrants rights advocates and neighbors, and they rallied, bringing the man and his son - who was in the van with him - water, gas and food so they could stay in the van and avoid possible detention, the affiliates reported.

The standoff lasted for hours. Nashville police were called, but stood by "to keep the peace if necessary," the police department said in a statement.

At some point, the neighbors formed a human chain around the man and his son, who weren't identified to the media, allowing them to get into a house, and later to get from the house to a car and drive away.

Yes, I have met Mexicans that have visited Canada. They like the cold weather. Canada does not allow them to circumvent the border and reside there. Not sure why Canadians think the US should allow this.

If the son is an American citizen I can understand this.

The Trump administration has put thousands of American citizen children in foster care & up for adoption because their undocumented parent(s) were deported.

Trump said he was kicking just the criminal illegals out, but he's actually ripping apart blended citizen families where nobody has committed a crime. This has led to tens of thousands of broken up families having to go on public assistance because the undocumented breadwinner was deported.

As you know I'm all for illegals being deported but when it comes to blended families and the breadwinner being deported there needs to be some common sense used because it's going to cost us more in the long run. Undocumented workers are still able to pay taxes and work legally.

You are stopped to identify yourself and your reason for entering. The border between the US and Canada is controlled but fairly open to allow for tourism and trade. The same thing happens when Canadians enter the US. It is fast and efficient and works pretty well.

You need to follow immigration policy. If you want to Immigrate to Canada you can apply for it. Also in Canada, illegal immigrants are not criminals, because the Canadian Criminal Code doesn’t list it as a crime – anywhere. Sometimes, immigrants have no choice and face persecution, rape, death, war or worse and have no choice but to be illegal while they try to get their lives on track.

Some people want Canada to be oppressive but mostly it is open and welcoming. Come up here sometime and a few Canadian friends and I will give you a hug. And a beer.

Why doesn't Canada step up and volunteer some humanitarian aid? Why isn't Canada rolling out the welcome mat?

Mexico accepts a lot of Canadians during the winter months. Used to be a bar in Mazatlán called "Canucks", even!
