Having fun...with ocular migraines

Lately I've been dealin' with chronic ocular migraines - getting them on a daily basis. They're affecting my vision and causing constant nausea. Already had an MRI and repeated visits with the doctor in attempts to diagnose a possible cause and figure out a workable treatment.

The MRI results were negative - which is a good thing.

People I've talked with say Imitrix/sumatriptan nasal inhalers seem to work, and a few say botox injections also help. Not thrilled with the latter option...but since the migraines are getting rather debilitating at this point...I'm almost ready to consider anything.

Anyone else dealt with severe migraines? Anything worked for you?

I have a torn hip labrum and my doc gave me Diclofenac Sodium as an anti-inflammatory. It's supposed to be a migraine killer and my wife (who gets migraines to the point of throwing up sometimes) used it to good effect. I would ask the doc though.

Diclofenac Sodium - noted...thanks for sharing. I'll ask the doc about it on Monday.

Right, I dunno if Im talking out of my ass, but someone told me a while back that they had had part of their ear pierced in a special place and it had really helped...

Just found this link that says about it, but also that its not proven to work, so your mileage may vary

Sorry to hear that!

It lasts about 20 minutes right? And it only affects vision during the migraine, correct?

How often a day do you have this migraine?

Micro dosing marijuana perhaps..

But I guarantee it's probably something with the esophagus/stomach/intestines.

The headaches are lasting all day, but the vision episodes are about 15-20 mins. in length and then the migraine really kicks in full blown, yeah. Usually I only have one vision episode a day...but it happens almost every single day.

Sometimes it's like vision loss, other times it's like looking through jagged watery lines or lightning that slowly moves through my field of vision. Not always the same. And it's only in one eye at a time - but not always the same eye.

It's been going on for a few years - but getting progressively worse to the point where I'm having to take considerable time off work because of it.

I've considered med marijuana...might talk to the doctor and get his thoughts on it. I already vape anyways, so that might be an option.

I hope they can help you with it! I only had it a couple of short periods in life. Mild but annoying headache which ended after a vision episode. For me personally it probably was some sort of stress related thing.

Diclofenac Natrium or Diclofenac Kalium also work, its the same thing.

Just as the doc for "Diclofenac"

But its a temporary thing, you can't take it for prolonged time due to side effects.
Sumatriptan is the best thing for migranes, the thing is to take it as soon as you register migrane feeling. If you take it when migraine is in full swing, it wont be as effective.

You can also try caffeine pills and see if it works for you.

I had migraines for a little while when I was kid whenever I wet out into the sunlight.. it eventually went away forever on its own..

It would go like this.

1. I would see stars in front of my eyes then I knew it was coming.
2. Then I would get the headache pains.
3. Then I would throw up.. and it would go away almost instantly after that.

A migraine is a common type of headache. It may occur with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light. Most people feel a throbbing pain on only one side of their head during a migraine. Some people who get migraines have warning signs, called an aura, before the actual headache begins.

Thanks, I'll ask about the Diclofenac as well.

He's got me on Almotriptan at the moment along with Topiramate and Naproxin but none are effective.

As you say, take it just before the onset of the migraine seems to be best. Once it starts its too late.

Thanks for the input GE.

Interesting link. I'd be inclined to give a little accupuncture a try first and if it works, try the next step. I wouldn't go gung-ho will a full-on piercing, tho. But my wife's mentioned accupuncture, too...so maybe something to check out.

Thanks CS.

Yeah, that's kinda the route to go. It IS like a permanent acupuncture. One that may or may not work for you. Still, it's something to keep in mind anyway

*update*

Wanted to thank everyone in the thread for offering advice, support and .

Seems we have it mostly under control at the moment. 50mg of Amitriptyline daily and Excedrine is keeping the migraines at bay. Haven't had one for over a month and considering they were happening every day - this is progress.

Still haven't figured out what was triggering them...but at least they're manageable for now. I'm back to my normal semi-cranky self instead of over-the-top full-on asshole.

plenty of caffeine, don't let the dose drop, say 5-6 cups a day spaced throughout the day.. and weed are you having a vision issue? pressure in your eyes? weed helps that. another thing that helps me is lack of carbs in flour form. I can feel the blood pounding in my eyes when I eat that stuff. not saying I have any trendy issues just saying cutting the flour really helps... ever try that out?

I went to an acupuncturist one for shoulder issues. she was chinese and had worked in the emergency room in china... for pain control I think. she told me it works great in china, not so great here BECAUSE, in the states they can't stick the needles in as deep as they want due to 'pussification' of the populace in the west...

I get regular migraines once in a while. They used to last all day but now when I feel one coming on I take a prescribed pill and its over in a couple of hours.
