In the morning we find out how prepared I am for an emergency

Seems like our power company is shutting down power to most of Northern California in the morning. Our city government has told us to expect power to go out at midnight, in about two hours. People are on Facebook losing their fucking minds.

Me.... I've got flash lights, battery operated lights, and enough food and water to last us a week. I'm good.

Why are they shutting down and for how long? That sucks, good luck.

The longest I've been without power was 36 hours but I had a generator to keep the fridge running part of the time and for microwave etc. It still sucked cause it was summer and no AC.

It's Yom Kippur, so the Jewish employees at your electric company must be taking the day off to observe their holy day.

It looks like high winds and dry conditions are causing a shut down that could last 7 days.

Welcome to my world, here in New England if you don't have a generator you are fucked!

I do have solar panels but... But at the end of the day it's hooked up to the power company because I still pull power from them. When the power is turned off it's ALL turned off.

Yep that is how it works in most cases, only solar installation on area without access to power network grants power directly.

A friend who recently got solar said they now offer special tie breakers that allow you to disconnect from the grid and then use your solar in a blackout.

What are they doing for all of the people that are dependent on electricity for basic life functions?

Those that depend on respirators, electric wheelchairs, BiPAPs, etc.

Hi Richard, hope all is well. Do you have a battery bank, which stores the solar energy for 2-3 days? If yes, consider getting a technician to tie it directly to you instead of the power grid.

Any extended power outage won't be good for businesses that operate in the area. They won't have revenues coming in, but will still have to cover fixed expenses such as rent and salaries. Businesses operating on slim margins could get wiped out if they don't have adequate reserves.

How much backup power does the typical datacenter have in reserve? Would servers still be running after a week with no power from the electric company?

Data centers typically have huge engines with large banks of fuel to run on, with contracts for fuel resupply. How long can they run? Would totally be dependent on the facility.

I see people losing their minds about this on social media. Folks are saying "just buy power from a different company then duhhh".

Much like Comcast in the area, I don't think a lot of people realize PG&E literally has a monopoly on power for almost all of NorCal.

Not good whats happening there.

There is a way to put in a switch so that your house pulls power dirctly from the solar panals and not the power company... I should look into that.

Wait WHAT?! Are you freakin' serious? I know the law around solar panels is that you have to be connected to the grid etc, but does this mean you can't use your own solar-generated electricity when the grid is offline?

Depends on the equipment setup you have. The concern is backfeeding the utility side after storms, etc and endangering people from downed lines and workers from lines thought to be de-energized.

I remember a long time ago when California used to seem like a nice place to live. Think I'd be better off in most 3rd world nations now. Unreliable electricity, people pooping in the streets in some cities, terrible air quality... sounds more like India than the USA at this point.

You can, but you had to pay extra for the wiring. Because I've only lost power twice in fifteen years I didn't spring for it. I'll reconsider if they do actually start shutting off our power.
