5 Weeks Dry!

I know I have been here before but it seems to be sticking this time - They put me on Naltrexone and it actually works!..

It basically works by taking the 'fun' out of booze - You carry on drinking after you start taking it and after a while you can't be bothered because nothing really happens - Drinking becomes boring - It doesn't take long for your brain to say 'whats the point' and you stop craving - I had the 5 day withdrawal shit, and that was bad - Some Diazapam helped though.....

I was hoping I would drop a few pounds - Not happening though - I can't stop fucking eating now - Oh well - One thing at a time...

BTW - It is meant to work well for opiate abusers as well - You have to be more careful though because the withdrawal effects could kill you.....

I once went 8.5 mos sober but man was that boring. I don't go to bars anymore but I do spend the last 2 or 3 hours before bed drinking a few.

You just need to stop eating till full. Food will add more weight than liquid.

Alcohol withdrawals are actually a lot more dangerous than heroin withdrawals

The only thing for long-term sobriety that's worked for me is attending AA meetings... I hit five or more a week. Also, was told I might get a sweet tooth after quitting, and I did--gained more than 20lbs... not a big deal, and better than the alternative: alcohol addiction and all that comes with it.

LoL at "not Croydon"... I grew up in Croydon.

My personal experience about stopping alcohol and tobacco:

After forty years of heavy drinking, I stopped suddenly after a moderate heart attack. It was 15 years ago. Since then I don't drink except maybe a glass of champagne on special occasions, a few times a year. The addiction is definitely over.

Quitting smoking has not been so easy. It took me over three months of heavy frustration using nicotine patches and gum before the urge to smoke subsided. I have never smoked since and I have regained my sense of smell although my lung capacity is reduced forever, the damage is done as my doctor says.

I'm now 74 and continue to enjoy life and women, with moderation...

Congratulations. Kicking something is hard.

You'll lose a few once you stop drinking completely. Alcohol pretty much becomes fat once it enters your digestive system.

Good for you Eddy! I don't drink every day but I'm the complete opposite as the only time I would even think about posting on a forum is after I've had a few. Sometimes too many.

Congrats. I quit drinking about ten years ago.

I won't name names, but one of my friends at one of our conventions got way out of control and needed to be restrained. Thankfully it was very late at night and only a handful of people saw the incident. The next morning I decided to quit drinking.

It wasn't difficult for me - and this is coming from a man who had his own Jägermeister machine at home (Thanks to the NATS afffiliate software lol). After a while you discover it's much more fun to watch other people get drunk.

I drink water mostly now.

Keep up the good work. I quit smoking 15 years ago cold turkey and the hardest thing I've ever done. One good side benefit though, without cigarettes drinking was no longer interesting so I pretty much stopped that as well. Gained some weight, but if you want to lose that you might have to give up sugar as much as you can. Don't ever think for a minute that addiction isn't sanctioned by corporate interests and the government.
