How To Be A Cult Leader


Chapter 1 - What it takes.

First and foremost, If you want to become a cult leader, You have to value yourself over all others. In order to project that you are the one in control, You have to feel that you are the center of the earth and everyone else is to serve you. You have to give yourself everything, While your followers give up everything.
Remember, A religion tries to make people function with others and families. Most traditional religions prepare people for the hardships of the world with a common goal of people looking out for other people. Life is difficult and many people need something to latch onto to face the world and the certainty of death.
To create the foundation of your cult you need a story. A background rooted in some sort of struggle. In the past, The more successful cults have a religious background where the cult leader was just a continuation of the that story. For instance, The leader of many cults claims to be the second coming of Jesus. But this is not always the case. The myth behind the Scientology cult was built
from scratch. Granted, L Ron Hubbard was a science fiction writer. Hubbard's writing skills are what gave him the solid foundation for his cult.
Think of what you want from your cult following. Then build your story to allow for your desires. Sex, wealth, and power. One way to get your story across is to slowly build the legend. Keep people wanting more. People want answers out of life and their problems to be fixed, You either have to give partial answers or have a legend that makes a follower's problems seem small.
In chapter 2, we will work on the outline of your cult and how to build your legend. You need to learn your teachings back and forth and be prepared to defend it. Another key aspect of building you cult line is to remember to keep violence out of your public persona. Yes, fear has its place. But you build that fear from within and do not project that fear to the outside world. If images of your followers with weapons start circulating, .gov will step in and send investigators. Your outline should allow for your cult to thrive beyond your years and not be responsible for your own ending. If you do not write a clear outline, you will stray and become lost. You will become a target of the world's largest cult. The cult of society.
Chapter 3, We go into gathering your first followers. We talk about the people to go after and the people to avoid. Your initial followers should be composed of people that others want to be around. You are going to want different types of people depending on what you want. Do you want carnal relations? Do you want wealth and land? Remember that anybody can be used. Every member should be transfixed on pleasing you and your demands.
In chapter 4, Creating a home base. We are going to determine if you want an urban or secluded place for members to meet. The pros and cons of each will be discussed. We also need backup and escape routes. Do you want to live on a secluded ranch like Charles Manson or in a South American country like Jim Jones. The location and architecture of your landscape should match the back story. Like fate has brought you and your people to your location.
Chapter 5 involves fund raising. Internet presence. Showing your worth to the world. The public face of your cult should be one that makes people want to hand over cash, Even if a person does not want to follow you. Outsiders can be used to help your fund raising efforts. Celebrities are the best. Even if you cannot get a celebrity to join your “community”, A celebrity can be a friend of your group. Bringing star power into your group can be very lucrative for you and your new society.
Chapter 6 is mind control. Keeping tabs on your people and keeping them in line. How to deal with a dissenter. How to with outside trouble-makers. Breaking people and taking everything away. Using shame and fear. Exercise and meditation. The fine line where mind control transitions from penance to torture. Creating a way of life that make people completely dependent on you. How to get another man to hand over his wealth and wife to you.


Chapter 2. The myth and legend.

Cults can be rooted in traditional religion. Starting a sect in a traditional religious group and slowly building the sect around yourself can be a way to go. Look at David Koresh. He was a member of the Branch Davidians, an off shoot of the Seventh Day Adventist church. David was able to convince Lois Roden to allow him to take over the Branch Davidian sect in Waco Texas. At first, David claimed he and Lois Roden would give birth to the second coming of Jesus. David later claimed to be a reincarnation of Cyrus the Great(the founder of the first Persian Empire). Later David Koresh claimed to be the Messiah. It has been a common ploy since the death of Jesus for people to claim that they are the second coming. Christianity is not the only religion that can be abused for the purpose of control of other people.
Shoko Asahara was a founder of a Japanese doomsday cult called Aum Shinrikyo. Shoko was able to twist Budhism, Hinduism, as well as Christine teachings to build a cult following. Followers were convinced that the world would end and only a few of Shoko's devoted people would survive. This brings up an important aspect that can be incorporated into your cult's story. The end of the world.
End of the world prophesies and major shifts in the world's balance of power play deep into building blind faith. Charles Manson believed he would bring upon the world a race war. By killing some famous white celebrities, This would create a race war. The blacks would win, but of course, The new inheritors of the earth would need Charlie to run the world for them.
End of the world situations prepare people to give up their belongings to you. Not only that, If you convince your minions that you are part deity, People will give you their bodies as well. It is all part of being a family and becoming one with their link to the other realm.
Your cult's story will be rooted in an ancient beginning that has been building for centuries, But the end is near. Your lucky hosts will a part of the final chapters of life. The Heaven's Gate cult was a group that centered around the end of the world and the group joining aliens on a space ship. Marshal Applewhite is prime example of how you should not be consumed by your own story. You will end up offing yourself and your followers. Your goals should always be checked every night. Remind yourself why you built this cult. Is it money, sex or power. Once you have total control. Depression can set in and you may decide you want more.
As stressed early on, Your cult should extend beyond your own life. While you may bring up the end times, Always bring up the fact that the end is near but in reality you never get there. So a simple outline of you cult's life would be as follows.
I. Create story.
A. Establish history.
B. Create your own identity
II. Gather followers.
A. Exert Control
III. Build resources.
A. Land
B. People (politicians, celebrities, soldiers, builders)

IV. How will this organization exist after my death?

Chapter 3. Gathering your first followers

Look for people that need attention and a support group. Have you ever met a good looking person and said to yourself “this person has issues, there is nothing to gain by befriending this person”. This is the best person to recruit. You have to act like you care, Just listen to them. One neat trick is to pay attention to what the person has to say, and repeat what they said back to them at a later conversation. When someone hears their own thoughts repeated back to them, They assume you have some deep connection down in the soul.
Rich people and attractive people should be your first targets. Most people want some sort of respect and feel that missing thing is just out of reach. Money, protection, and sex is what will bring more followers along with more power. This is the fun part. Researching people is easier that ever now. Usually heirs to family fortunes are lost. Their parents spent their life building something and the heir do now know what to do with their life.
The leader of NXIVM went after the heirs to the Seagrams Whine Cooler fortune. This money was the bedrock of the organization. Without the money that was siphoned off. I do not believe the leader would have been able to seduce C list celebrities into branding his initials onto their bodies.

Chapter 4. Create A Home Base.

Starting out small. This could be a simple place like your apartment or home. A place where your followers can reach out to their support group. Even in the beginning there should be a consistent place for group meetings and a place for one on one consultations.
For group meetings and personal consultations the area should be clean. A place people want to be close to you, their leader. People should be relaxed and comfortable enough that they may want to get naked there.
If you gather enough funds, You will want to find a permanent base. Preferably an isolated place where you can take over the local population. A very small or no police force is desirable. If there is a police force, have a meeting with them. Maybe make a few donations. Local government officials can be you early warning for snitches or Federal Government investigations. Look at the case of L Ron Hubbard. “Dianetics” is the public outline presented for Scientology. I still remember the commercials for this book back in the 1980s. The commercial simply showed the book and a question like “what is the reason for life” and below that was a page number. All your life questions were answered in this simple book, supposedly.
Scientology is the best example to show a cult can generate money. The best selling book was just the start of the income flow. The book led to an initial consultation. Which cost money. The initial consultation leads to a series of one on one coaching sessions. Each session costing more money. Plus information is gathered about the follower. Strengths, weaknesses, desires, and embarrassing moments. All this creates a profile to let you own your follower. Getting him or her to give you more and more money.
In the modern era, There are many ways to gain money for your group. Make sure your cult has a Patreon account. This can be an effective way to bring new followers into your cult. Make Youtube and Facebook videos showing your group doing good things. Use these videos to direct people to your patreon accounts.

Chapter 6. Mind Control.
Profiles of your followers help you understand what makes your followers tick. Keep a file on each member of your cult. Your end goal should be for the subject to lose their identity and gain the collective identity of the cult. Once the individual is no longer an individual, Any desires for material gain should be gone.
In the modern social media world of today people try so hard to be unique. But we are all the same. The biggest cult is that of the internet. People want to fit in and be a part of the world view. Look at Reddit. Initially, Many members bound together to fight the evil Scientology group. But now, Reddit is a cult into its own. The media gets most of their stories and ideas from Reddit.
Every cult member should have multiple Reddit accounts, So that you can control the world view of your cult. You can also find out if any members are complaining in Reddit. Search Reddit everyday for your name and the cult.

Don't forget these guys. I wrote this as a tongue-in-cheek guide. Just a short writing exercise. But I don't understand why people keep falling for these guys.
