"BMW envisions a situation where, for example, if one customer wanted a feature that wasn't requested when they bought the car, it can be added afterward. And if that car came into new ownership with someone else, that new owner could also activate the features that they want."

BMW's are great cars, wifys on her 6th but the tech electronics fully suck, forcing you to use their systems will lose a lot of customers.

However, and I don't know about the US but here in Aus I'd guess 90% of BMW's on the road are company cars, and $20 a month to spy on an employee.. that's cheap and most importantly.. that's legal, so sign me up!

Honestly,
I can't understand why anyone would buy any of these 'modern' pieces of shit when for the same amount of money you can get a fully restored (often improved) kick ass classic car.

If they do this ill probably switch to Mercedes for my next car. The reason BMWs are starting to fall apart isn't that they are made worse - its the service plans.

When you buy a new bmw you get a 5 year service plan where they cover all oil changes etc. This is a great deal, on my car the first service was at 2000km so the oil change there alone paid for the service plan already. The problem is though that before they had these the recommended oil change interval was 15k km or 1 year. Now it's 30k km or 2 years. My friend sells bmw parts - the engines are good for 100k km now.

Exactly! Look retro cool AND it's an investment since the classic car will always grow in value.

Fuck these modern mobile Internet units they call cars.

Because they are just consumers, nothing more. They will buy what is advertised. Touch screens are a good example of how marketing can make people spend on something bad, but also dangerous.

For the "most" part, I prefer my cars that are pre-1970s. However, when it comes to the marriage of analog and digital technologies I'm a big fan of cars from 1990 to 1995.

Between the years 1990 to 1995, we had a full understanding of chamber design, fuel injectors and the right amount of computer control on timing and combustion. We got decent power with really decent fuel efficiency and WITHOUT removing the most essential component of the car.. The Driver.

Compared to today's cars...

Styrofoam backed pieces of shit where the computer(s) are the component(s) that are prone to failure and are expensive to replace. Software is becoming a common element in cars and everyone should be in fear of what happens the day "updates" and "support" for your model are discontinued by the manufacturer.

Plus now the driver is just an after thought. He's no longer the essential component and believe me when I say that this manufacturer design flaw is best seen in how shitty drivers are today. The number of retards behind the wheel are growing in number and it won't be long before some government asshole passes a law that all cars must be driverless.

Yea it's Tyranny...

This is probably the last generation that will know the joy of being able to jump in their car and drive somewhere without clue as to where they're going or anyone else knowing that they're gone.

There will be no more gas at the pumps but instead charging stations that will log your location. You won't be able to pay using "anonymous" cash but you'll need to use your traceable credit card. You'll drive by a McDonalds and a pop up will flash on your windshield asking you if you're hungry.

The world is being ruined by lazy cowards.
Too lazy to do anything for themselves and too scared to think for themselves.

Safety and reliability. Try to look at real data for crashes where the car is 15+ years old and see what age does to metal strength.

I still have the one Toyota left, but the two main cars are now BMW and the new bike is a BMW as well (I know its half CN... I know... just like your iPhone)

Do I like old cars? yes, I would love to drive a old Volvo 240 turbo every day, but safety is a issue for me, so I dont.

You may not like BMW's business model, but then dont pay for it - nobody forces you to do so. I for one would love to only pay for my heated steering wheel as a subscription during the winter

Some BMWs look nice, but I never ever heard that 'what awesome car I have, drove 50k miles and no problems at all!' from a BMW owner.

I am not a car-fan guy, but driving a Subaru for the first time at a New Years party several years ago made me fall in love with these cars, in two months I got my first Legacy [2007..] and two years ago I finally got my US Subaru Legacy 2016 [there are only a 'handful' of such cars in Europe], petrol, 2.5L, and I fucking LOVE this car.

Your car has a cruise control/heated steering wheel, but you need to have a subscription to use it. No thanks! Never had a BMW, never will.

Same here. I just got rid of my last 550i with the n63 V8 - what a piece of shit. That thing spent more time in the shop than any other car I ever owned. It was recalled and BMW rebuilt the entire drivetrain, and it was still a piece of shit. They spent the entire warranty period telling me that it was normal for it to burn a lot of oil, and then as soon as warranty was out, it was burning oil because the valve seals were bad. Which they offered to fix for the small sum of $5,000. After 5 years, my $75,000 ride was worth a grand total of... $15,000 private sale.

Fuck BMW. Never again.

I had a 550i as well, that N63 engine (and the N62 engine that preceeded it) was crap. Burned so much oil it's not even funny. That being said, literally every car manufacturer writes that '1L/1000km is normal oil consumption' to cover their asses. BMW writes 1L/500km as normal consumption for M cars - I have an M4 and haven't had to add oil in the last 15k km (oil change soon).

The trick is to accept that BMW doesn't know how to make V8's, and to not buy cars with those engines.

This may be true. I had a 535 before that, and it seemed to be a better car. I can forgive a quality problem, but what I can't forgive is the way they fucked me on it.

My wife had a BMW a number of years back. Not a good experience. Lots of little problems and a few of them the dealer said we caused. Here's a new slogan:

BMW, the EA Sports of Cars!

It is only limited by the amount of gas like every car on market since fuel injection modders change computers and chips in cars anyway.

I only had the 535 for about a year, so it's hard for me to say. I just know I had very few problems that year compared to the nonstop problems with the 550 from day 1.

I never should have traded. I had 4 hours to kill at the dealership on a service visit, and that situation never ends well for a guy like me.
