I was there when Jim left us on Friday afternoon, His family asked me to be there when the life support machines were unhooked, and it was a profound experience to see his final decline and passing.

He was highly respected in the business, and at his surprise 80th birthday party last September around 100 people showed up, including many from the golden age of porn. The agency license in his office was dated August 13th 1976, long before many here were born. He was a pioneer.

He was, unfortunately, addicted to cigarettes: 2+ packs of menthols a day for most of his life, and he told me he'd started smoking at age 14. He was put on oxygen last December after he had a fall, and over the last 9 months his health declined slowly at first, and then very fast.

Just after he'd been put on supplemental oxygen, we'd gone out for lunch and when we got back to his house he went out on the patio, put his portable oxygen machine on the floor, took the cannula out of his nose, and lit up a cigarette. I asked him what the fuck he was doing, and he said "I knew at some point I'd have to pay the price". I shot a photo of the moment, and it's clear he knew exactly what he'd done.

I'm nearly 4 years sober, but I quit smoking 30+ years ago, and it was way, way harder than quitting booze.

Fair point, but to be honest I was not aware back then - but that was pre. § 2257. Looking at peoples history at age 45 now, is a bit different than how I viewed the world at age 25-30.

I have worked with people that should be in jail now - some of them still posting here, and I would never do that again. But I dont praise them for being "good" just because they put money in my pockets 15 years ago.

I'm not on that end of the biz so would not pretend to know anything about any of it. all I know is that I remember his name from a doc I watched eons ago (easily 20 years, can't even begin to recall the title of it) and the talent that participated had nothing but glowing things to say about him

the doc wasn't about him (wish I could recall the title) but he came up as a topic

I don't want to quit, I really love smoking (see ava, my whole body curved into the joyful act of lighting up) but I do know nothing good will come of it. been smoking for 30 years, have enjoyed every cig I've ever lit. smoking as I type this

I'm down to give it a go though, recently started a new life in a place that fits me and new starts mean I don't have to keep the same old habits

expect it to be rough, will work out like mad to not gain fat-weight and make sure I don't run out of CBD, the only thing aside from nicotine that calms me down without fucking up my head

I often think about Jim and his crew of misfits... Junior, Skippy and Steven Austin. But most of all I think about his couch and all the people that just sat on it waiting to be called for work.

I've got nothing bad to say about South. Which when you think about it, in this business that's really saying a lot about someone's character.
