2/3 of all wildlife wiped out since 1970

Wildlife charity WWF has said populations of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles have collapsed by an extraordinary 68 per cent on average globally since 1970 - more than two thirds in less than 50 years.

“nature is being destroyed by humans at a rate never seen before, and this catastrophic decline is showing no signs of slowing.”

If we keep increasing the world's population they will need somewhere to live, something to eat and those can only come from what wildlife need. Add what corporations demand, poaching, pollution and the general apathy of governments and it's dire for wildlife.

That's interesting. I wonder how they collect a census for instance of how much animals there are in the forest in Washington or Oregon for instance. Seems like it wouldn't be possible to get anything resembling an accurate count.

It's called mark and recapture - usually by tagging or banding. You catch X number, tag them and release. After a period of time you go out and catch Y number and comparing the number of re-caught to the total sample size can calculate the size of the population.

A significant part, I'm sure. They are prolific hunters.

In the last 40 years worldwide we've had;

HIV/AIDS
SARS
Mumps
Swine flu
Middle East respiratory syndrome / MERS-CoV
Ebola
Zika virus
COVID-19

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_epidemics

This is because we are destroying the natural world and encroaching on it in a way evolution can't arm us to resist. Black Death 1346–1353 Europe, Asia and North Africa wiped out 75–200 million (10–60% of European population)

How bad will the next or next worldwide pandemic be? They will be worse than Covid.

What animals thrive in that enviroment? Vermin.

Unless we stop incresing CONSUMPTION AND POPULATIONS drasically the future looks bad.
