Tech: Moving stuff from one VPS to an other

Hi!

I would like to move domains etc from one VPS (Debian 8) to an other (Debian 10), what's the best approach? After quick googling what seems to be the most common way is to simply use SCP to move files, but then I would have to set up domains etc. again

An other approach would be to simply use Virtualmin to backup the current virtual servers (domains?) directly on the new VPS via SSH.

We aren't talking about many domains here (around 10) with a few databases, no emails (all forwarded). Which way should I choose?

Thanks!

Our sysadmins swear by rsync for data moves, though there are cases when it isn't the best solution. You'll still need to do some setup on the new VPS.

Backup from a control panel is usually easiest done it many times with directadmin without any issues.

In many controlpanels (Plesk as an example have Plesk Migrator) you can do a site migration to another server, with the same control panel or a compatible setup

Virtualmin is on both so I guess my best choice is to try with that. Thanks

The part about lowering the TTL is KEY, so you can swing back to the old host fast, without loosing traffic. They set it to 1 hour, I would set it to 5 mins (300 seconds as normal DNS settings are set in seconds)

Sometimes your hostingprovider will help you for a small fee, and that is usually a good approach. In case some of the sites experiance problems later, they are there to help you with their higher level of system experience (depending on the host)

Using cloudflare as DNS..
Btw I will set the hosts file locally to the new IP before setting the IP adresses to the new server, to check if the sites are working fine.

Also the host is the same (OVH), just ordered a better VPS..

Use rsync once you have set up the domain on the new server. The only reason I can think of that rsync may not be the best option, is if it's a Windows server.

If you use the control panel backup software, you are going to need at least DOUBLE the disk space to the data you want to backup and move, on both the old and new servers! The problem with this option, is that most cloud based VPSes do not support shrinking the storage once you are finished with the migration, so you end up paying for disk space you are not using ...
