China to ban kids from playing online games for more than three hours per week

Kids and teens under 18 years old in China will only be allowed up to three hours per week to play online video games, according to new rules published Monday by China’s National Press and Publication Administration.

The move is a fresh blow to the country’s gaming giants from Tencent to NetEase, which have dealt with an onslaught of regulation this year in areas from anti-monopoly to data protection. That has spooked investors and dented the value of Chinese tech stocks.

According to a translated notice about the new rules, people under 18 will be allowed to play video games one hour a day between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. weekends and legal holidays. The agency billed the rules as a way to safeguard children’s physical and mental health.

The rules will apply to companies providing online game services to minors, limiting their ability to serve those users outside of designated hours. The companies also will not be allowed to provide services to users who haven’t logged in with real-name registration, preventing them from simply remaining ignorant to their users’ backgrounds.

The latest rules from the NPPA significantly reduce the amount of time minors can play online games. Under 2019 rules, people under 18 were allowed to play games for 1½ hours a day on most days.

I was the same as a kid. All kid gamers are the same. I'm sure he'll grow out of it eventually.

Nah the games today are different than the console days (Atari/NES/Sega) of the past.

They're way more addictive.

Yes, it is literally form of gambling - a mobile game which i play regularly, empire and puzzles, is pure example of it: you cant buy top level heroes, you can only buy a "chance", meaning you could easily spend thousand of dollars and still not getting a shit lol. I play it without spending single bucks, but it goes really slow, buildings not maxed yet even after 2 years of playing. Also, they got banned in Vietnam because of this gambling part.

That's true.

Games were pretty addictive way back when, though, considering they were brand new technology at the time. We used to spend hours indoors playing the first Maddens. And other games, too. But we'd also go outside and played the same sports on the street. I think it's not the games themselves, but the multiplayer modes that are so addictive these days. LOL maybe the Chinese are onto to something...
