Dune movie vs book?

Hi!

Anyone who read it and have seen it (the new movie), does the first book tells the story of the first movie or more?

I think it cuts off later, when Paul marries. I read it a while back and in one large gulp as I like to read book series in one go so not 100% sure

Meet in the middle and listen to the audiobook instead. That way you can do other stuff at the same time

The current movie stops about halfway through the first book, Herbert wrote 6 before he died and had an outline for a seventh but in my opinion the first one will always be the best, I read it in the early 70s and reread it every 10 years or so.

I watched 1st movie long time ago, which amazed me, so I had to read the book, then obviously watched the remake. It's pretty amazing done, with new ways of making the movies, CGIs and whatnot. Sequel on it's way, the book is very large so it has untold story. So I'm looking forward to the sequel. Deff worth of watching and reading the book!

I thought "Dune: Chapterhouse" was very good too.

Ok this is exactly what I wanted to know.. now the question is to wait for the second movie then read the book, so I get a more detailed picture of the story.. or read the book first then get disappointed what is going to be left out in the movie

Yeah that part I found during my quick browse, also that there are 3 prequel books wrote by his brother or something like that..

Chapterhouse was probably the best of the sequels written by Frank Herbert, Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune were meant to be parts 1 and 2 of a new trilogy that never got finished so there was always a bit of a cliffhanger, his son Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson took Frank's outline and completed the story with Hunters of Dune (2006) and Sandworms of Dune (2007)

The Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson Dune books were panned by many but I found them an enjoyable waste of time. Plus there's a lot of them!

There are a bunch of prequels and sequels
Dune: House Atreides (1999)
Dune: House Harkonnen (2000)
Dune: House Corrino (2001)
Dune: The Butlerian Jihad (2002)
Dune: The Machine Crusade (2003)
Dune: The Battle of Corrin (2004)
The Road to Dune (2005)
Hunters of Dune (2006)
Sandworms of Dune (2007)
Paul of Dune (2008)
The Winds of Dune (2009)
Sisterhood of Dune (2012)
Tales of Dune (2011)
Mentats of Dune (2014)
Navigators of Dune (2016)

This don't think that's a complete list, but I haven't built my library yet, all my books are still in boxes so I can't check, but I've read them all

I think the movie does a good job of telling the first half of the book. Some stuff left out.

The books were difficult to read, because my mind tends to drift. But I read all that the father wrote. My favorite was "God Emperor". After I read the book, I watch Quinn's videos. He does a great job presenting the stories with images and music.

Got spoilers though. Jumps ahead in books.

One thing about the new movie that I found to be the most jarring (other than the skinny kid cast as Paul) was the way they pronounced Harkonnen

In my mind over the almost 50 years I've been reading Dune books it sounded like
har KON nen
Even before the 1984 movie

But in the new movie they kept saying
HARK on nen

It bothered me so much that I had to do some research, it seems Denis Villeneuve has it right David Lynch and I had it wrong, I found a video where Frank Herbert himself reads an excerpt about a minute in

Still sounds wrong to my ear

I started collecting sci-fi novels when I was about 12, I read Farmer In The Sky by Robert Heinlein and was instantly hooked, my next book was a series of short stories and The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury, I first read Dune shortly after and really enjoyed it, I've read every subsequent Dune book. I still have all those books.... somewhere.

If I ever get my legal issues with the Trust that owns my house worked out I plan on converting one bedroom into a library. I have thousands of sci-fi paperback and hardcovers that have been boxed up for decades and moved from west coast to east coast and back again (the number growing greatly in between moves) I would love to see them all unboxed and shelved and organized. If I ever get it done I'll take pictures.

I go into a Barnes and Noble sci-fi section and realize I may have more titles than they do.

I think The Martian Chronicles were one of the first for most of us. Good to see a fellow sci fi lover.

If you like writers telling you what every character in the room is thinking almost every time they speak, then Dune is for you. Abandoned it at 50% due to this tactic. Super annoying.

Reader here as well. I read the hobbit along with the other stuff. Started about 10 I think.
