Visa and MC restrictions for Russia are pure unadulterated BS

Read this online:

"At the weekend, Visa and MasterCard announced they were suspending operations for Russia. But in a cruel twist, it turned out that the ban will only affect those using Russian-issued cards outside the country.

The 72 per cent of Russians who never travel abroad - incidentally, roughly the same proportion of Russians that support Putin - will not be affected. Those who have fled or want to visit the West will be punished."

Confirmed with Russian friends still inside Russia. While the sky is indeed falling, their Russian bank issued Visa cards are working just fine inside the country.

Are you saying their USD/EURO Visa cards are still active or do you mean they still are able to pay by Visa in Russia with their toilet paper rouble?

The reason why Visa and Mastercard issued cards work on a local market is because those domestic, local, transactions go through the countries own banking system and do not use the Visa or Mastercard clearance system. That is why local, domestically issued, cards will continue to function.

Most of the sanctions have no teeth. The EU is still paying 600 million euros a day to Russia for fuels, and Russia is paying Ukraine for transit.

Russia's central bank has been stockpiling foreign reserves ever since Russia last invaded Ukraine, when President Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea in 2014. Since then, Russia's holdings of foreign currency and gold have almost doubled, ballooning to $630 billion today from $368 billion seven years ago.

Building foreign reserves could have been a way for the Kremlin to guard Russia's economy against sanctions, by giving the central bank more ammunition to protect the value of the ruble. The ruble lost half its value against the U.S. dollar after Russia annexed Crimea, forcing Russia's central bank to spend $130 billion to stabilize the currency.

Except it turns out that Russia’s foreign reserves strategy had a major flaw: About half of the money was held overseas in foreign banks—and now Russia can’t get to it.
Those are pretty big "teeth"

The other half of their money and their gold can be sold via china or any other country that isn't sanctioning them...

Even if that's true, you just moved the goalposts from "most sanctions have no teeth" to "half of their money" can still be accessed.

HALF! LOL --- Where did you pull that number from anyway?

Almost 200 multinational brands have pulled out of Russia. Their currency and economy are tanking.

Again, those are pretty big teeth.

Where did I pull that number from? From you. You wrote that half the money is in foreign banks. Thus, by extension, the other half of the money must be in non-foreign banks - as foreign vs non-foreign is binary. Besides this, as I wrote they are still getting money for gas and oil so they still have income.

Both are active. Also Putin has tried to make Russians use the domestic Mir (Mir payment system) cards instead of VISA and MC. It was looking as a hard travel for them, but with a help of his Western fiends, Putin won this fight against VISA and MC. Very soon every Russian will use his monopolized MIR. My wife already got her Mir card, while I'm still on my VISA and MC cards because I'm lazy...

You went from "sanctions have no teeth" to "they can still get half their money"

Now you moved the goalposts again, with "they're still getting money from..."

Do I have to say it again? Those are pretty big teeth.

Of course the sanctions have heal huge and sharp teeth. But not for Putin. He will be a beneficiary of those sanctions (read above). So the teeth are intended to bite regular civilian Russian people to make the angry on West and gather together aground Putin. That's what actually happens right now.

^^ This ^^

For everyone reading this thread, the sanctions are having an effect, it's just not as BIG as the foreign companies and western media portray them to be.

Many years ago, the French under pressure from the US did not deliver Russia a warship already built and paid for. Russia then blocked imports on popular food items like cheese. Russia encouraged these items to be made in Russia. Now, the Russian market offers quality French style cheeses locally made.

And the EU embargo against Russian ships ... the legal wording excluded the actual cargo. That is why you'll read stories online about ships docked in the UK, that tell the story of the dock workers refusing to unload the cargo. It was a personal decision they made, and not one to remain in compliance with the current sanctions.

Russians outside of Russia are unable to access their money (Visa and MC), unable to manage wire transfers (Swift) and find it difficult to fly home (flight restrictions) if that is what they wanted. They are stuck abroad. Think about that holiday abroad, having a great time, then suddenly you are stuck in paradise, without access to funds in order to cover the costs of shelter, food and transportation. At some point you may become homeless abroad, and a burden to the foreign country.

While I agree with the concept of applying financial pressure on the Russian citizens, in the hopes they stand up and revolt against the Govt, we are hurting ourselves in the process. This only works if we have a long game and strategy in mind. Do we?

What about oligarchs? They also don't care about losing their properties and a chunk of their wealth?

Exactly. This is a new kind of warfare. One in which the US/EU (plus Canada, UK, Australia and others) has MASSIVE economic power.

Even China doesnt want to get on the wrong side of us right now. If they were going to come out in support of Putin they would have done it by now

Russia is heading back to the stoneage. The only question is will they blame Putin or can Putin pursuade them to blame the west

They do of course. And they (the oligarchs) may have some effect on Putin. But only them, not regular Russians. In the majority, Russians were happy when sanctions were applied to the Putin's oligarchs.

So you hide to decide who you fighting with: Putin or the whole Russian people, which mostly against of this war.

Come on guys. The answer is "time will tell". There are a lot of knee jerk reactions happening by all governments, and people on this board.

Remember, religious organizations, political parties, and governments alike, do many things intentionally to keep us divided. This way our anger is not focused on their failed promises.

Sorry, but fuck that. I'm not buying this bothsidesism crap. This war is 100% on Putin and the Russian government. Nobody else. They invaded a sovereign country. Furthermore, there are clear indications of war crimes, including targeting civilians and bombing a children's hospital.

Who the hell is "they" anyway? I'm not into conspiracy theories.

Anyone taking Russia's side or creating doubt by spreading misinformation is either a paid Russian trolls or someone not worth two shits.

I can believe that. This is an information war aswell as an economic one

Putin is desperate for his people not to view ANYTHING that he doesn't have control over. Hence the blocking of facebook, twitter etc, closing down all the independant media and the 15 year jail sentence for anyone spreading what he calls fake news

The older generation might fall for that as they tend to get most of their information from state TV but the younger generation wont. I predict there will be huge sales of VPNs in Russia in the coming months

The older generation might fall for that as they tend to get most of their information from state TV but the younger generation wont. I predict there will be huge sales of VPNs in Russia in the coming months
Russia is on a path to become a bigger, more dangerous version of North Korea.

^^ This ^^ accept I can imagine VPNs being blacklisted, so connecting will be hard to come by, and how will people fund the purchase? Domestically the banking system can block the purchase.

Yep true. But then again what choice do we have ? Its either economical war or all out war.

And I cant see the Ukranians negotiating with him either. Hard to negotiate with someone who thinks your country has no right to exist

Thinking about it Im not sure he could block VPNs ??? The whole point of a VPN is that its encrypted and its impossible to tell where its coming from. Apparently Chinese kids do it all the time to get round their firewall

I am so saddened by what this world has come to because Russians, Ukrainians = same people.
We also thought so before, the difference is that they came to our land to kill our children, women and old people. And we kill them to protect our homes. We are not same - we are different.

Only way to block it is to block every connection going outside Russia. You dont even need to establish connection to your PC , you can surf straight from VPS machine .
