Yes. Mechanics...always...unless you know them personally...then twice as much.

Google how much the part was. Then the rest was labor you'll be amazed at labor cost.

I bet all of the parts are on RockAuto for like $50 and the complete instructions are also online to do it yourself. Probably take like 10 hours to do yourself going slow and carefully.

Mechanics are always 100% a rip off. They will bend you over any chance they get and then make up an excuse.

$250 US an hour for car repair?!?!?

I remember when I was 18 and my Rx-7 blew its engine, I got a 12A rotary from the junkyard INSTALLED for $300! Can't remember if I talked about it on RevScene or not.

That's right... the engine, and RE&RE combined with fresh oil, antifreeze, was $300 total out the door. This was back in 1996-1997ish. This was about a week's worth of my wages working on a cranberry farm.

I wonder if you had a 10 year old car in 2024, say a 2014 Toyota, and if you needed a new engine plus RE&RE, how much it would cost? Probably a wee bit more than 1 weeks of wages...

Sounds high. it's a cheap part and a few hours of labor. Call around and get some more estimates.

That is for the steering pump. Changing out the leaky lines is a different story. Messy job.

Wondering how you priced it without knowing what year and model, not saying you are wrong, just wondering.

Yo... order the parts, fly me there and back home, and I'll fix it for cheaper and we'll shitpost on GFY the entire time I'm gettin' drunk and working on it

( this would be a disaster for sure )

That includes parts? It’s about 400 bucks high. Depends on if he is good and fast. Could be worth it.

Find a shop that will let you bring your own parts, you'll save a lot. They'll charge you 2-4x the part's cost plus book time for labor.

Not all shops will do this, though..

Are you going to the dealer? If so, you'll get good service, but it's almost always the most expensive option.

I got a refurbished V6 dropped in my car in like 2006ish. Cost me $800.

I heard they're coming out with a new RX7, too, but.. the rotary engine is just for charging the electric motors lol.

Look at it this way: You probably can't swap the parts out yourself. They have the tools, experience, lift, etc. For the $1000, you are getting new parts (hopefully), everything installed properly, and hopefully some kind of guarantee.

What I would suggest that you do is maybe shop around at 2 or 3 other repair shops to get a price. The parts probably cost between $100 and $250 as others have posted here, and the rest is labour. Garages can be flexible on the labour but not always on the parts, so shop around. Make sure you ask about the guarantee, and some kind of proof that the part is new, and genuine too if you care about using only genuine Honda parts.

Ya 1000 sounds steep unless that price includes labor and taxes with parts. There are some great used parts stores out there yet you'll need to put it in yourself. did you ask them if it was a new or used part they were putting in?

Why not do it yourself as it does not seem that hard.

One time I changed out the power steering pump in a Buick LeSabre in a parking lot when it was snowing, it fucking sucked.

It is a pump, so I presume it should suck.

If it is a Honda then I would have thought it would not be too complex.

Things I would not do myself are breaks and timing belt, as bleeding breaks is a pain and timing belt is a huge task.

But looking at vids online, steering pump replacing seems not that complex.

Someone said buy the part and go to the garage with it. It may save you a tiny amount, but if it goes faulty, then you have to pay again for it changing. If you pay them directly then in the uk and i presume the usa too they have to replace it. So it is not worth trying to save a few pounds.

Also do not go to a dealership as theyt charge a fortune for fixing things.
