how much water do you drink in a day?

not tea/coffee/whatever beverages. just straight up wata

popped into my head earlier when posting in another thread about AI usage of water when I'm almost as bad. easily 2L a day not counting what I drink at night when I go out dancing/at the daytime office, etc

also on my mind as I'm having surgery tomorrow (nothing serious, just a reconstruction of some cosmetic dental implants I had put in about 13 years ago). normally they'd last at least 15 years but I have osteoporosis so the bones surrounding the implants have weakened a bit. last dental cleaning the doc told me they were a bit wobbly and better to get 'em redone before one fails and I have an embarrassing incident publicly or privately with one coming loose and falling out

was hoping they could just give me some laughing gas and redo the implants as I don't mind a bit of pain but nope, a whole surgery thing that will require gen anesthetic

that means 8 hours with no water leading up to it. fuck me

no food for 8 hours, that's cool, I think that's called tuesday. but no water? man I am gonna be so cranky tomorrow am

relieved to get this done as the 'cross island trips for specialist consult/xrays, etc have been a PITA no matter how gorgeous the travel is, but NOT looking forward to a very parched night and morning

all in all I probs drink 2.5-3 L per day. it's hot here and am very active. but so is everyone else and no one drinks nearly as much as me

just curious, how much y'all drink?

Not nearly as much as I should, and unless it's cold, it sort of tastes nasty. A friend had a bad ass reverse osmosis setup and the water was amazing! If I had that would probably be drinking more. Good luck.

I'm def at a point in life where I drink more iced coffee than water. But iced coffee has water in it.

Kinda slippin, gotta get my shit together. My body let me know about it yesterday at a concert in this insane humidity.

some of y'all are light weights =p

(also thanks for the well wishes, t'will be fine)

Mz Lloyd you get it, but seriously for the rest of y'all, don't y'all get tired and crabby when you don't get enough?

man, dreading this trip tomorrow morning. a beloved friend is gonna drive me (and pick me up, as the 'responsible adult' as per instructions), will try not to snap at him on the long ride in to the city. I'll probs be ravenous with thirst before he even picks me up

I'd just smoke herb for those 8 hours but apparently I'm not supposed to do that either. been years since I had an operation, but I do remember that (among other things cuz that was a non-dental major surgery) the lack of hydration was dread

everyone enjoy a couple ample glasses tomorrow am for me por favor. I'm taking the day off and sipping and savouring my lime (just a squeeze) wata

I am super-curious if anyone else hits near the 3 L mark though, it can't possibly be just me

Every day - morning - cup of coffee - then as the day progresses 3 bottles of water in total. I have a fridge in my home office stocked with bottled water.

Through the summer, we each drink maybe 1.5lt of water a day & through the night, winter, maybe a litre through the day, the night's are colder, so not so much.

We drink a lot of other drinks through the days, whether wine, rum or a few beers with lunch & dinners

How much do you pay for water Jesse? Our bottled spring water here´s about 20 cents a litre

haven't had alcohol in years but not gonna lie every now and then I feel for a Magnum, not sure if they have those in your neck of the woods? delicious dessert in a bottle with some energy boosters and way too many cals but god damn it was tasty

if you haven't had one and can find it, try it! think it would be classified as a 'digestif' for you high-falutin' foodie types. also goes well with pussy

tap all the way. I don't pay anything for water unless it's at my neighbourhood spot that squeezes in fresh lime or out at a club where they pour it for me and of course I tip

don't buy bottled (try to minimize plastic use) and don't even boil it at home. same with when I lived in BZ

everywhere I've visited/brief-term lived except the DR and Guatemala was fine either straight up or with boiling

Belize and JA for long term living, zero issues from tap or even upstream river water not near the mines

one exception TCI for long term living. there the water was orange and smelled and tasted like burning hair. NO ONE drank from the tap and boiling not enough. if you drank it your throat burned

instead we'd get these free (and were reusable) 10 gallon jugs and fill 'em up for 50 cents USD at water stations. when I was new there remember it being such a cool place to make friends. also excellent for muscle strength/toning cuz my husband complained constantly about hauling it about. yeah, sometimes a PITA but I liked it

most expats usually just did bottled, didn't know or care what they spent. was just happy locals and local-side temp workers had affordable access in reusable jugs cuz tap water not even a choice. even washed my face and rinsed out my hair with jug water

I woulda thought Spain would have potable water? was there so many moons ago for a few weeks (had such a wicked time) during a Euro road-trip summer and maybe I drank bottles? was honestly too long ago to recall. your post surprised me though

20 cents per L ain't bad at all, not anywhere near cigarette prices which is my comparable for most things

happy drinking everyone

I don't know much water I drink but I drink a lot... I start first thing in the morning.

It's 6pm here right now and I am working from my office in the master bedroom. I have a bottle of water in front of me, and two others waiting in reserve.

I do not drink anything other than water at this point. And Gatorade.

Good to hear all went well. But, seriously, you really like just water, that much? I drink it, don't get me wrong, it's most definitely "life", but to be honest, it just never really quenches my thirst.

yes. and this a judgement-free zone for harmless fetishes

also was seriously curious where peeps are at esp in light of AI water-usage which I mentioned elsewhere. which in turn made me think about human agua consumption. was not trolling/hating in those posts, just two passing mentions in the context of us understanding the amount of 'invisible' resources we use with these tools. I think a lot of people still honestly aren't cognizant (pun so intended in light of the corp) of the resources consumed

I'm pro-AI, I have had fun exploring it and will use it to create/complete my bot. just let's all know the cost of it and use it as responsibly as we can

a while back when I told a local friend how much water AI 'drinks' her comment (paraphrasing) was 'so basically a bit more than you'. they all saw it with hurricane Beryl, me drinking more than some couples (some with kids) per day when we were all parring when everything was shut down during and in the aftermath for days

so that and I had to go without it for 8 hours. at least I could have my cigs

again, was super curious where others were at re personal (in/on their person as the cops would say) consumption. simple confluence of two events/topics

recall when I was a kid my parents worried I had diabetes cuz I drank so much (apparently diabetics are always thirsty). nope, just fucking love water

try a liter even. will rock your world

Damn, shocker, but now I have nothing to say.

Alright, who you kidding, course I got something to say. First of all, while I'm sure there are some decent folk out there, for the most part Humans have ravaged, consumed and destroyed pretty much everything in their path, at whatever cost. And the waste level is un-believable, so much waste, with many things, including water. I mean, the golf courses are the freaking worst. They waste sooo much water on grass, I mean so much water. If it was just for trees, fine, but grass?! And for what, for a bunch of knuckle heads to hit a ball around a course and make shady deals. No clue what these people are after -- world domination, power, fame, fortune, moving to mars, no idea. Now, on the other hand, Humans have also created some cool shit, like this AI stuff and others have done some good things as well. Anyway ...

As far as water usage, and how much AI uses, I'd have to look into that, but I only use AI sparingly as well. Lived off grid for awhile, so learned to appreciate things like water. Especially when there were times where the only way to get water was to catch it when it rained, or melt/boil it when it snowed. But, that's a whole other story in itself. I really don't think this planet has enough water to sustain us for much longer, so yeah, there's that too.

by all means do so. prepare to be astounded

my line above about my friend joking to me about AI water usage in comparison to me (after I told her about it) was just that, a joke. AI energy and water consumption levels have to be compared to cities and nations, not individual-level humans

the fact that you don't know this kinda speaks to why it's important for those of us who care about the future of our species and others on this planet to mention it every now and then

hardly I harp on it constantly, this thread was, as I stated, simply a confluence of AI usage thoughts in a couple other recent threads relating to the pervasiveness of the tech in our lives-including my own, and how the fuck am I gonna go 8 hours without water?

let alone put chaps on agua and ride it like a pony?

couple starter links below, but multiple studies from multiple sources available all over if one cares to look, or knows the issue is real to look. your post would suggest the latter. no shade on that

tons of stuff out there absent AI-bashing or 'death is nigh' nonsense. many focused on problem-solving, with the idea that the current unsustainability of this set of tools is something that could be mitigated significantly through a combo of human will and ingenuity (and perchance AI tools as well?)

note if/as you read, that various LLMs consume some pretty significant diff levels of resources, including the feedback loops between energy req's and water source use. still all fuckery level bad right now, but evidence that AI/LLMs are not some monolithic thing set in stone

rather, would indicate that if enough peeps actually know and care way less wasteful ones could be created

here's two links. if you're actually interested you can find tons on your own

https://san.com/cc/ai-tools-consume-...han-estimated/

https://oecd.ai/en/wonk/how-much-water-does-ai-consume

anyway, I posted this thread for my own interest and curiosity about direct, down the throat human consumption, but if it inspires you or anyone else to learn a bit more about the AI side of our human consumption then awesome

do hope you explore it

- Training Meta's LLaMA-3 open source model used 22 MILLION LITERS of water.

- A 100-megawatt data center can consume about 2 million liters of water per day, equivalent to the water consumption of 6,500 households.

- Approx 11,000 datacenters globally. Large data centers, like Google's hyperscale data centers consumes 550,000 GALLONS PER DAY, while small data centers average about 18,000 gallons per day.

People are literally using AI for fun and games. in the meantime, several states are facing scarce water issues, so I'm not following the logic here. I know the Colorado River is experiencing significant water shortages, (The Colorado River provides water to seven states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming) it's basically drying up in certain areas, water reserves keep getting lower and AI is consuming MILLIONS OF GALLONS of water each day. Where are they getting this water from? Might be time to re-think AI, no doubt.

I'll quibble and say redesign the models. there's a reason why peeps in northern climes don't burn coal in their fireplaces anymore

no current solutions to anything are perfect, some closer to ideal than others but welcome to being human. I like the current moves towards eliminating heatsinks in urban NA centers. significant improvements on ambient heat levels in high temps at a ridiculously low cost

perfect, nope. but a start that doesn't involve waiting 10 years to grow trees

since we, for now lol, design LLMs, no reason it can't be done better. that would take some will, and the current methods are cheapest cuz the corps don't pay for those aforementioned 'invisible' costs. neither do us end users, til chickens come home to roost for us and all that

huge fan of history, and of Margaret Atwood since forever. if this topic interests you check out PayBack

last chapter deals with the notion of balance in nature, how one can only take so much before the account is wrung dry

not AI related, but central theories aligned

so yeah, you were surprised? exactly. this is why I do make brief mention of it when I feel the topic is appropriate (or in the case of a thread I started meander wherever the fuck I want)

with the kids I'm teaching Claude to/exploring with, did a bit on Monday. no school during summer so library park tutorials just free form lets make it interesting for them

informal neighbourhood level stuff, all outdoors, anyone and everyone of any age welcome to drop by and listen. but it's for the kids

I started out with explaining why this tech is currently really problematic. awesome and opens up so many possibilities, but really damaging to our planet in current forms. current being operative term

we're doing a few things in our sessions, try to mix it up and summer makes it so much easier

plan to pick this one up again on friday. tomorrow a dude is gonna fill in for me with skateboarding and also teach them how to fix some stuff on cars. skateboarding me, the cars not really my purview

still very swollen, need to do some stuff around the house, not up for rambunctiousness tho I usually love it. might be up for story hour on thurs

I love the result (the new implants rock, I'm crazy happy with em) but my mouth/jaw hurts and did not fill the scrip for the 10 (!) oxy's I was prescribed cuz this time the implants go down way deep into the fucking bedrock of my jaw. new tech advancements in 13 years

will just eat smushed frozen mango and raw soft tofu smothered in spice to make it taste decent for a couple days, and try and get some rest with the help of herb, ibuprofen and cough syrup. do chill work, no interactive stuff. always with one of my many glasses of wata beside me

my friends will try to treat me like an invalid like they did last night making a fuss about me washing 5 fucking dishes and a few glasses but will preempt them this am by going out at 5 to give my goat her mash and letting her out and whelp, my cat is always with me. have an open door knock policy but if peeps see me out chilling reading, listening to music, swimming, will let me be

no cam obs and my manager (best hire ever) has everything on lock for the offline biz for the next couple days

might grab a sheet and fall asleep reading in the hammock watching the sunrise, listening to birds, seeing/feeling the ocean, the scent and sound of trees. would like gens coming up to have the option of experiences like that

when me and the lil ones pick up again curious to explore their ideas on how this situation can be fixed before we go through my progress coding my totally vanilla bot not to be used for smutty purposes

I want them to learn how to use this stuff, be aware of why it's so not ok in current form, and be motivated to help make it better

plus they'll talk to their friends and parents about it, spread the word

glad ya read, fucking madness, right?

don't need to be that way

I drink about a gallon every day. I collect my own spring water from a mountain spring. I would never drink tap water

so yeah, you were surprised?

Yeah, actually I was very surprised to see such high numbers. I mean, those are really crazy numbers. Like I said earlier, water is "life" and to be wasting all this on AI is ridiculous. To be honest, I'm not sure how I feel about using it at this point. I'll still do small things here and there, but I was planning on utilizing it for a few things, but have to re-think that now.

I'll check out that book for sure.

Atwood is a clown and a complete hack. The opposite of "The Handmaid's Tale" has come true in society.

You can get a Pur or Brita water filtering keg or pitcher pretty inexpensively and it will make your drinking water sooooo much better. Highly recommend.

I have a filter to my house, a filter in my fridge, and then I triple filter through Pur kegs. But just a Pur filter is a pretty great improvement.

Are you unaware The Handmaid's Tale was inspired by what actually happened in Iran in the 1970's and continues to this day?

Yes, you're absolutely right that The Handmaid's Tale took inspiration from the Iranian revolution, and it’s fucked up to know that women in parts of the world still live under regimes where freedom is a distant dream. That kind of suffering is real, ongoing, and deserves every bit of attention it can get. The attitude towards rape in places like India is enough to make you throw up.

But I think what makes some of us turn up our noses at how her work is so praised...

Atwood’s story is NOT framed as a cautionary tale about religious extremism over there, but as a dire warning about Western, Christian-rooted societies here. But if you're like me, a porn dude who was raised Christian before I became a womanizing, alcholic, cocaine-snorting, Supra-driving fiend of Satan's spawn.... the truth is almost inverted.

In the West, huge warts and all... women have access to enormous legal, cultural, and personal freedom. Christian-based societies tend to offer something rare: second chances and social forgiveness. You can be super fucked up and Christian people will still generally be kind to you. Nothing a Christian loves more than a former whore or drug dealer turn babyface. I honestly believe I've had God directly intervene in my life and experienced true divine grace, and suffering is a great way to receive the heavenly wifi signal of God's love. Having said that, my understanding of Christianity is through the works of Saint Augustine, more so than the Bible, so I guess I'm not a "real" Christian in a lot of people's eyes. I couldn't say a prayer to save my life or quote a single bible verse.

Any quote that can capture Christianity in a nutshell:
"Da mihi castitatem et continentiam, sed noli modo"
"Grant me chastity and continence, but not yet."
St. Augustine's Confessions, Book 8, Chapter 7, Section 17

Christianity understands sin and forgives it: Sme of the best people are the worst sinners, and they mostly turn a blind eye to people's behaviors as long as they aren't hurting others. Probably because a lot of Christians accept that God can't be forced on people and, sometimes, people have to fuck up and suffer before they can download that divine grace into their souls.

Meanwhile, some other cultures fully embrace honour-based violence, forced marriages, and deep-rooted misogyny. Other religions are openly committing genocide while the world watches. (Not taking a side here, both sides 100% guilty.) These aren't relics, they’re happening now, sometimes even in our own cities in Canada, and we tiptoe around naming them.

So while Atwood’s work carries literary weight for sure, the position that her work is in now... feels like a political "afterlife" hijacked by the woke agenda. It's performance over prophecy.

She was completely wrong about the west, probably spot-on about other places on Earth, and nobody will admit it.

I can always tell when he 'writes' with an, er, artificial boost. a bit of a bizarre result when mixed together with his own blather, but Huggles is gonna Huggle

curious why he even brought up The Handmaid's Tale. guess he couldn't think of anything even remotely related to the thread to talk about

fuck yeah that book was prescient in light of the threats to reproductive rights faced by American women today, (and like Amelia posted, rooted in real life events as are many of Atwood's books, though more commonly the post WW2 era in Canada) but the one I rec'd above was Payback. a series of Massey Lectures, fucking brilliant

ironically that book has a whole chapter exploring 'Debt and Sin' as it has played out across multiple religions throughout history, but would be a bit too complex for him to wrap his head around so...

of all her fiction books, I think my top three are:

Cat's Eye (not because of the title, I swear)

The Robber Bride (characters are a bit two-dimensional but it's written in the style of a fairy tale and it fits)

The Blind Assassin (the ending always makes me a bit sad, but in such a good way)

but according to a dude who has reviews of his own books that include 'incel scribbles with crayons', Atwood is a hack. alrighty then

I can hear the bacteria talking. They be like:

"Yo, how we gonna get in this place."

"Oh, hell no, this shits on lockdown"

"Man, screw it, I'm not ready for this, TRIPLE X PROTECTION"

Seriously though, you're not messin around. Eh, I can go with or without, filters that is. I just have a generic behind the fridge type. But, doesn't last for long.

But, I've been meaning to try those you mentioned, thanks for the reminder!

Bottled from the Segura mountain range that protects the Orihuela coast, running from Alicante to Cartagena, one of the larger mountains, just 5 mile from where I live
