from what i hear the sony +/-R is the best out there. the OEM version is around $200, but sony provides no support for it. the retail internal is around $300, and looks a little fancier. it's supposed to kick ass.

i think i'm going to pick up the new NEC 4x +/-R drive tho, it's like $140. i don't see a need myself for a $300 dvdr. i just basically want to make data backups anyway, i was going to go with the toshiba, but figured just as well have both formats.

Get the LG super drive, it does everything except the + formats. If you want to reuse your backup discs then go for DVD-RAM, as it's basically just a slow hard drive. You don't need to generate and burn an image - you can delete a few files from the disc, or update a single file, just like a normal floppy or HD.

Here are the formats that the LG writer supports:

DVD-R
DVD-RW
DVD-RAM
DVD-ROM/DVD-Video
CD-R
CD-RW
CD-ROM/CD music

I recently purchased an internal TDK 440N 4x speed DVD burner for my new PC. It burns DVD+-R and DVD+- RW plus CD-R/RW's. I just made a test DVD from one of my movies that played nicely in my Sony DVD player. The TDK also happens to be black which fits nicely with the Dell Dimension 8300 tower color.

teac brought out a multi-format burner.
i bought it some weeks ago and it's amazing. burned so far every DVD (platinum 4x + are cheap and good) and the dvds get played on both of my dvd players.

price is at around 150$ i think...

definitely get a multi format dvd burner (+ and -) as table top dvd players are going both ways right now.

I have both a HP external and a Memorex internal and both rock. A lot depends on what burning software you use.

Just keep away from the Sony, it looks good as for the specs but it's burned dvd's can't be read by most of the dvd players out there..
