There are about 200 different codecs for avi out. You better ask the guy what he has used to encode it.
But, if it's just because of the sound, well for sound usually only some different codecs are used. Mostly these are uncompressed (no codec), acsp, mp3 (but here it could be also different ones)

Search Google for a program called gspot - it will tell which codecs a certain file requires in order to play properly.
Afterwards go to google again and find the codec. |
