Governor Arnold to release 1/3 of all prisoners in CA jails!

Convinced that California can no longer afford its $5.3 billion prison and parole system, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's administration is exploring moves that would all but eliminate parole conditions for nonviolent, nonserious offenders and eventually -- through early release and lighter penalties -- dramatically shrink the prison population.

Some of the moves result from recent court settlements. Others are efforts whose planning began under former Gov. Gray Davis and have been speeded up by Schwarzenegger.

"Arnold has had us identify the nonviolent, nonthreatening inmates," said one high-ranking corrections official working on some of the proposals. "We could probably cut the (prison) population by a third, which would be a huge savings for taxpayers and give some of these people a chance to be productive citizens again."

http://www.sacbee.com/content/politi...-8949908c.html

On some issues, Arnold is turning out to be more liberal than Davis.

Problem will come when they start reoffending and the police do not have the budget to investigate the crimes.

A risky move IMO

Some of these people are probably repeat arrests for drug possession, white collar crimes, and other stuff like that.

They aren't planning to let murderers and rapists out earlier than they already do.

Very smart move. Most of those people don't need to be in jail with the 'real' offenders anyway. They just learn the real criminal stuff in prison and come out worse than before, especially since they won't be able to get a job when they come out anyway.

A great move. Most of the population arrested is for drug convictions. I don't support drug use but I don't think people should be sitting in a cell for it.

I kinda see this as being a good move.. The california legal system is already WAY fucked..

In San Jose, a buddy of mine was arrested for doing some graffiti art, He was in a holding cell with a statitory rapist, the rapist got out of jail befor my friend did, as a matter of fact, 2 months before my friend did.. Pretty fucking pathetic, that someone who comits a sex crime is released before someone who comits vandalism...

Good point at the moment they are stopping people at the borders and turning them back, in a few months the borders willno longer exist.

So all the burgulars, grafiti artists, dud check writers, con artist, drug dealers, drug users, etc. do not take up police time and resources?

To answer that question Charly, it costs around $25,000 per prisoner just to warehouse him in prison. If you have that person working on the street he will be pumping that money himself back into the economy by working. So in total you look to save about $50,000 per person. These people would have to each do some serious crime to take up that amount in resources.

Prison should only be for violent felons. The rest should be retrained or do community service and learn "life habits" from volunteers.

Fuck the Correctional Officer lobby...fuckers helping to bankrupt the state.

Nearly 2 million Americans are incarcerated
In the prison system, prison system,
Prison system of the U.S.

The percentage of Americans in the prison system
Prison system, has doubled since 1985

All research and successful drug policy show
That treatment should be increased,
And law enforcement decreased,
While abolishing mandatory minimum sentences.

The thought that a convicted drug user, convicted bad check writer, etc could get a job that would pay him $25k per year is ideallic at best, highly laughable in reality.
Closer to the truth is that they get a job making about $10-$12k per year if they're lucky.

Maybe you are right. Some will make that little but that would still put them into the plus side of the economy instead of costing us money.

I agree. Most of that mandatory minimum sentences should be abolished. All these do is fill up the prisons with non violent offenders.

As much as people dont like to talk about it, how many people are serving time, because of being in the wrong place at the wrong time???

Stopping by a frineds house to say hi, and 2 minutes later DEA and locals server a drug warrant. Should you do 10 to 15 for saying hi to a friend??

I sat in the tank once or twice. Most of the people in there were in for stupid offenses like having a joint, fighting (bar style), or not having ID on them when stopped. That and parking tickets can send you to jail.

They should have televised pay per view events where lifers are matched up in a cage and have to fight to the death. I would name the show, "Lifer Death".

bummer that you've already spent most of your days inside

don't want to whip up any racial issues. But it might be that these old cases offered little changes of freedom for some ethnic
minorities due to recial issues.

Yes. It may be expensive... but death in retaliation for death is just so primative.

And putting a man in a cage where he's no use to his family or the world in general yet costs us hundreds of thousands of dollars isn't backwards?

We have kids starving on the street yet we can lock a man up for life at a cost of $25k a year for the rest of his life. What gives us the right to put a man in a cage for life?
