thats what I dont understand. You would think with a million and one designers for mainstream pages that would drive prices down but it seems to have the reverse effect |

The end result was roughly an 8 page site, which looked exactly like the site it was replacing, (because the CEO liked that one) that by all rights should have taken max 2 or 3 days to do. and this is why I charged them $10k for it. The cost of all the Tylenol I had to buy.

My theory is because in adult, it's about as condensed as the internet can be, we tend to stick together for the most part.
People in mainstream seem to fly solo more often than not. I could be wrong, though. |

Taking on clients is a joke. I got out of that.
Too much bullshit with clients wanting every little thing changed. Wanting you to work for free (basically) after the job has been completed. Bugging you 2 weeks later because they deleted something. One month later, deciding that they want to do it all over again, because it ain't working for them. |

I guess it just seemed, to me at least, that every job in mainstream got turned into a huge multi-month long ordeal for no reason... everything always had to be difficult.
In porn, it's more focused. The categories may change, but the bottom line is we're all pushing sex for a buck, in the best way we can come up with. The bullshit is cut by 80% right there. And no one is going to have teams of people sitting in a conference room for 2 months discussing various shades of yellow for a table border.

Some adult designers should start offering mainstream design services for the guys that are in adult. If the mainstream site/company's owner is in this business he probably knows what he needs.

I am not a designer by any means but I have contracted one mainstream job.
Total fucking nightmare! The big difference is that mainstream is not really focused on making a sale. The site has to display their personal tastes etc. So they FUCKING NIT PICK it to death. |

We got blue-chip clients (their PR divisions anyway) and it's one nightmare job after the other. Recently, we did XXXX's site for Cannes... guess what? They wanted to distribute the site on minidics. WTF? This is a WEB site not a multimedia project! 7,000 ![]()

I would charge far more for a mainstream 'application' than an adult web site, simply because adult basically has a consistent, pre-defined, statement of work, or functional spec. Whereas, mainstream applications require a lot of time producing the necessary documents to prevent feature-creep. It also takes far more time developing sever-side data management since each application is mostly unique. A non-application mainstream web site would be roughly the same as an adult oriented site in time and money.

I recently went to a buisness trade show in Belfast and was speaking to a few mainstream designers about how much they charged for specific services e.g installing a small script to accept cc card transactions. This would take no longer than 30 - 60 mins to get up and running and they where charging clients £700 (thats around $1400)
My mouth literally dropped, mainstream designers charge crazy prices sometimes |
