since Linksys' routers have kind of a weak range, I'm looking into setting up an access point or two.... but the theory is still kind of fuzzy....

I know it's essentially a wired extension of the router, no mystery there.... but do you lose a port with every access point? Or does it pass-through..... ?

guess what I mean is, the access point is consuming one port.... do you then lose another port when you connect to the access point? For a total of two ports for each access point?

and are you extending the access point off a non-wireless router, or a wireless?

I have a 6 port router that goes into a wireless access point. Use to have 2 wired up which took up 2 spots on my router, but my new wireless access point gives me a strong range and a lot of coverage

so, if I got a 4-port, fill up three with cat 5, and #4 with cat 5 to the access point, off a wireless router, anything connecting wireless will be forced to connect to the access point instead of the router..... correct?

because I don't want to end up with some weird conflict with trying to connect to the access point AND the wireless router at the same time.... but if all the ports are full on the router, it would HAVE to connect to the access point.....

i guess....

that's what I'm thinking anyway.....

either that's the right scenario, or I'm gonna end up with one seriously fucked mess.

wait, actually, I suppose I could disable wireless in the router, and then the access point would be the only signal..... so as long as it only eats one port for both the access point AND the connection to it, all would be golden.... correct?

hmmmm...... ponderous.

There will be no conflict between the router and the wireless access point. You should be able to switch from wireless to LAN without problem.

Not sure if this helps but I'd given up on wireless in our house until I tried D-link and was amazed that it actually fucking worked! I'd used Linksys before that and got nothing better than modem speeds on a laptop a mere 20 feet away in the next room. I don't have any faith in Linksys equipment at this point (tho it does look pretty...lol)
